When launching out of Mukilteo today a wave rolled the kayak a bit sideways as I was getting ready to hop in.  Dumped my crab pot in 2 ft. of water.  No big deal but when I reached for the paddle it was out.  I had just wrapped it in the leash.  I read an earlier post about the velcro leash failing when his kayak rolled.  Have any of you experienced this?  I'm going to have to modify mine so this doesn't happen when it really counts.

Never happened to me, but it shouldn't come as a complete surprise.  Velcro doesn't hold well against lateral and torsional force.

I don't see too many of the newer paddle leashes still using wrap-around Velcro.

There are a number of leashes that wrap around the shaft and only use Velcro to cinch the loop tighter.  Look at the paddle end of this one: http://www.austinkayak.com/products/206/Bungee-Paddle-Leash.html.  If (when) the Velcro loosens, the loop of the leash itself is still too small to fit over the blade of the paddle.

Some makers are getting rid of Velcro altogether and use a small loop of nylon strap material that you thread around the the shaft and, again, is too small to fit over the blade.  See https://www.amazon.com/Seattle-Sports-Sportsmans-Paddle-Leash/dp/B001HYKB2U/ref=sr_1_29?s=outdoor-recreation&ie=UTF8&qid=1482545281&sr=1-29&keywords=kayak+paddle+leash

Glad you made it in safely.  Show us what you come up with to solve the problem.

The fish bite twice a day - just before we get here and right after we leave.

I use the Sea to Summit leash and have never had problems with it coming apart at the paddle end. I keep it adjusted just so that it's loose enough to slip on and off without re-doing the Velcro every time, but tight enough that it doesn't slip up and down the paddle in use.
