The double uni works fine for a braid to mono connection. We've tied thousands on our HOW gear

[emoji8] Never implied I do it better, just offering lessons learned over LOTS of trial and error. My way is never the only or best, just another someone else may not have explored. Much of what I've learned about our PNW fisheries was picked up here then expanded on.

Why don't more manufacturers put the rubber coating or inserts on the spool? I've seen it more lately but still not nearly enough. It works really well.

There are three conversations I try to avoid: religion, politics, and fishing knots!

I sincerely apologize for how my smart-a$$ comment was written, because it was not meant to read as sarcasm.

Sooooo...I guess I am in the minority of fisherman that spot-weld some down-rigger cable to my spool as backing. Never slips.  :confused3:

dahoBrit, a uni-uni knot is for joining lines of nearly identical diameter and probably isn't a good knot to join braid to mono.  Most descriptions of a uni-uni knot say something about "lines of similar diameter", so unless you're using a 10# mono backing for 50# braid, it might be a good idea to try a different knot.

Double the braid on a bight and tie with that.  It thickens up the braid portion of the knot.

When doubling the braid, do you still double the number of wraps made with the braid?

Now that's innovation right there, would scuffing up the spool with sand paper also work... I currently just tie and reel and (knock on plastic) have never had one slip.

I like the idea of doubling the tag end of the braid Allen. Likewise scuffing the braid or removing the slick coating someway Jojo.

Here is an excerpt from a web article:
Melting the ends of super braid will prevent unraveling and help a knot never slip.  Spectra fibers melts at 152 degrees Celsius.
The equivalent of 305.6 degrees Fahrenheit.
Melting can be done with a good hot soldering iron too, but matches and lighters should be onboard for jobs like this, or melting ferrule cement for gluing rod tip-tops back on.
Protect the knot with your thumbnail and let a lighter, or a match singe/melt the ends together.  Keeping in mind all Spectra Fiber line is woven like cable from many tiny threads.  Not melting these ends will result in a raggedy fanned-out frayed looking knot tag end.

Not an expert by any means but I've done a few different methods. I've done the electrical tape method and it worked well. Also had a baitcaster that has holes so I threaded through one (which obviously worked). Another method I saw and have used is doing a few half/slip knots (like a clove hitch) over the spool semi loose, then after three or four you can pull tight. This has also worked for me.
