This is the reason why I am selling my halibut fishing gear. I will never go out that far (a few miles from shore) even I got babysitter with me. If I ever go to the ocean, plan to that some day. I will only go out to about 100 or 200 feet deep, which I hope is about 200 to 500 feet from shore (I want to see land mark when I am out on the kayak).

I would ask a moderator to remove the scar (post) from the list.

Been cussed enough, those who were involved know others feelings and maybe a potential member would come back.

Not anything I would hope would be viewed by potential members as it's not a drawing card...and certainly not the welcome I received a year or so ago.

Now that is funny. It's been a long crappy winter and sometimes people get cranky. I'll see you out there on my first NW pac butt hunt. Sure won't ask anybody for any tips.  :D

Here are the dates for Oregon Halibut Season 2017.
http://www.dfw.state.or.us/MRP/finfish/halibut/seasonmaps/2017_hbt_map.pdf

Not sure if WA has a similar description from WDFW - I don't fish WA, so have little familiarity with the seasons and the zones.  I do know Neah Bay and Hobuck are in WA.  ;D  And I do know weather conditions play a HUGE factor when it comes to fishing during those specific halibut dates (regardless of power boat or kayak).

Nearshore Halibut Locations (GPS or even "general ballpark" descriptions) seem to be guarded way more heavily than most people's sister's phone numbers, even for people without sisters.  I think the new guy just joining the forum (without providing any background, experience etc) and wanting to tag along on a kayak halibut trip was asking alot.  The rest got out of hand.

Tinker, we're good, you and I. Looking forward to some good fishing reports. Seems like it's been a long winter for all of us.

My two cents?
Until I have more than 30% vision in both eyes restored, and can get back into a physically fit condition, I'm not even gonna think about going off the beach unless I'm on a charter boat or power boat with people I can trust. I don't want that burden on my fellow yak fishermen.

Guys, old and new, more caution please when you start a new phase in your yak fishing life. Every day, every year, we see more and more accounts of people who got in over their heads and were lost.  Its becoming so bad we now have state regulators looking at us as a hazard that needs oversight.

Stop bickering, go fish. If you can take a newb and make it work, more power to you and good for you and him/her. If, like Hooknose said about me after my first two times with him, " never again" , well so be it. I either learned by asking questions or found others who I fit in with better.
As of July 12th, I am, officially,  retired.

I feel like safety entails more than just someone’s skill level and physical abilities. Safety should encompass adequate social competence & ability to communicate & work with a team of individuals who are able to put their own egos & own personal aspirations aside for the better of the group. As a professional risking your life & that of your colleagues to do your job, there is no place for arrogance and intolerance that could compromise the group. IMO, these types of people are a danger to themselves & others and can become a liability real quick in adverse situations. Through his stated professions this gentleman may demonstrate the skill level & physical abilities, but his impulsive reactions, hubris approach to the group, and basic inability to communicate like a professional are huge red flags for me.

Late to this post but my thoughts exactly. I'm a former Navy diver and Submarine rescue swimmer. I've dove with wetsuit (not dry) in the Bering Sea to clear a clogged reactor intake. I have a Navy Achievement Medal for bravery during an equipment failure (loss of air) during a dive mission. But I don't have shit when it comes to Kayak fishing Neah Bay, I can't stand fellow Navy and Coast Guard sailors that flaunt and flex their dive skills. This will probably be the last time I mention it. As a forum Newbie I know that respect is earned not given. Show up to meet ups, donate some time to Heroes on the Water, and make friends. Once my respect is earned, I'll ask for a babysitter and not be offended when it's called such... If you've earned the right to wear a Blue and Gold Shirt, be humble. And if you don't know what that means you didn't go to a real Military dive school.
