For now, I am just sitting here being cool. But, in about another two days, I plan to make post #100.

So to get back on track...

I've been told by some sources that using stocker trout on a spreader behind a squid skirt works good.

My questions are, should I cure them or not?

What hooks should I be using?

What LB of Mono should I use for my leader?  I was thinking on using 80ish lb braided for my main line.

I honestly can't wait until May.  I've been watching tons of videos of halibut and ling's being caught.  Getting out in my Yak as often as I can.  I've already got a list of crap to bring to camp out up at Hobuck.  The wife won't be too happy with the laundry list of gear I'm going to buy for the trip.  It feels like I'm getting ready for a week long elk hunt :)

I'm really just curious as to what all you guys run as far as gear.

Bring ear plugs for your trip, and brine your trout.  If you're going to use 80# braid, make sure your safety knife is at the ready.

I use 100 to 150 mono on my terminal gear with a 20 to 30 pound mono going to the lead cannonball

80# line sounds rad but 60# mainline is more than enough. You can probably break it if need be w/o a knife which means more line on your spool after a few snags/break offs. Hook sizes are all over the place but 9/0 and up works. Use your bait as a guide on how big to go on hooks.

Be prepared, have all proper safety gear, the listen to the OG's advice. And don't be afraid to pull the plug on it all if the conditions look iffy.

For sure on the safety gear.  I'm all gear'd up for that.  I've been on the ocean before but not in a kayak.  I am totally with you about the conditions, I've seen some good weather turn bad real quick.

bb2fish: Nearshore Halibut Locations (GPS or even "general ballpark" descriptions) seem to be guarded way more heavily than most people's sister's phone numbers, even for people without sisters.  I think the new guy just joining the forum (without providing any background, experience etc) and wanting to tag along on a kayak halibut trip was asking alot.
I can't stand fellow Navy and Coast Guard sailors that flaunt and flex their dive skills. This will probably be the last time I mention it. As a forum Newbie I know that respect is earned not given. Show up to meet ups, donate some time to Heroes on the Water, and make friends. Once my respect is earned, I'll ask for a babysitter and not be offended when it's called such... If you've earned the right to wear a Blue and Gold Shirt, be humble. And if you don't know what that means you didn't go to a real Military dive school.

I've been around awhile & know most of the HOW & NWKA folks that fish around Neah & the Makah Nation. Every one of these folks are generous & have big hearts. That being said, these are relatively small gatherings with a fairly tight knit group. I've been reluctant to invite myself to the May gathering.

Tell her you are saving lots of money by having lots of halibut gear, vs purchasing previously frozen halibut from Costco.  8)

So I picked up some Lancer Jigs yesterday.  Tony wasn't home but his wife was.  She let me in on a hilarious story...

Their son thought it would be a great idea to make a big jig just for halibut.  Guess what his idea was to call it???

the Butt Lancer :)  LOL

40-65 braid main line, 80-250 mono leader, 9/0-12/0 big river bait hooks.
Landing device of some type and a sharp knife to cut the gills. Easier if you go through the gill plate.
