I'm impressed that you can roll sit-on-top kayaks because the height of their seats and their width make them tough to roll.  I'll really be impressed if you can roll a sit-on-top kayak loaded with fishing gear.

I figure, it's better to have strong and effective low and high braces than it is to have a strong roll, because if you have good braces, you will rarely need your roll.

I'm wondering why, if you already have experience and a strong opinion about thigh straps, you asked the question.

To facilitate a conversation about leg straps and gather some knowledge.
There are strong boaters here and I value those opinions. Specifically the risks vs benefits.
Like I had expected, there are some crafty veterans using the straps in the pacific.
I suppose that this thread also helps me get reacquainted here and grants a view on the current NWKA culture. The pedal drives may have thinned the paddlers ranks.

Does my inquiry or the topic bother you?
Some may have thought it interesting..

Seemed like a very legit question and I appreciated it.  While I don't want to start a (another) dark hole, it's hard for me to figure out why you would be questioned for asking.
One of the problems with posting is that it's hard to tell the intent of the questions or responses based only on the text.  Assumptions quickly head south, so again, I appreciated the question.

I liked that you asked a question AND you had some extensive experience and an opinion to follow it up.  It's great to start a new conversation in these dreary high water duldrums of not catching any springers (me anyway).  I was interested in this thread even though I have a pedal kayak.  Was wondering if the additional hull handling ability of the thigh straps would be worth it for surf landings when I'm trying not to crash.  I'm pretty sure I could lean the kayak so the beach facing edge was up and do some bracing into the face of the wave ...all without thigh straps.  But then again, I've never tried...   So it's all just theoretical for me.  Do I need thigh straps??  I'm impressed that someone can actually ROLL a sit on top kayak - that's very skilled.

I found the conversation interesting, although I found the form of the original message curious.  Don't mind me, I'm not much of a fan of leading questions, that's all.

I've been debating getting some for my thresher (wilderness sells them) but I like the look of your thicker straps.  What brand are they?  Where can I get me some sit on top rollers? :)
Kayaking without wearing a PFD is like drunk driving.  You can get away with it for a while, but eventually someone dies.

I have them for my thresher and they really take the disconnect out of the seat. The new flat seats don't have any lateral support to push on in the surf. The thigh straps solve that nicely. I don't have the wilderness ones but a more heavily padded brand that I can't think of the name.

If you get a chance to look up what brand can you let me know?

Danuu. I kind of want to try and roll my thresher now. I've rolled some SOT with thigh straps but nothing the size of a thresher or with a similar hull design. A wave ski is easy SOT whitewater boats are reasonable a full sized fishing yak that takes skill(not sure my roll is that good).

The set on the left is from Ocean Kayak. It has the shock cords.
SEALS makes the set on the right and I have greater success using those.

I used thigh straps on a Tarpon 100 when surfing it; it's a holdover habit from my whitewater days.

Why do you ask?

I'm wondering why, if you already have experience and a strong opinion about thigh straps, you asked the question.

This is unfortunate. You have experience in WW kayaking AND kayak surfing. Your expertise could be helpful.
I hope that you can still enjoy the thread and please feel welcome to critique my roll.
I would appreciate your feedback and thoughts on which technique might be best for twisting the big boats over.

That Thresher is a lot of boat. Hope you can make that happen and please document.

I enjoy the lawn chair style seats for fishing. Im not sure how compatible the lawn chair will be with leg straps, especially in the elevated position.

I am far less experienced than... well almost everyone, so I was interested as I have thought at times of using my kayak as a drift boat on say the Clack or Wilson. Getting to a piece of bank or a bar that otherwise would be inaccessible. In between the quiet waters are some spots that are not quite whitewater but would by kind of sporty in a yak, and I have pondered thigh straps as a solution.
