I'm the wrong person to ask about salmon, so hopefully someone else will chime in.

Looking forward to seeing you!

probably a waste of time for salmon right now.  There should be a ling on every drop though!!

lol Chris.  You surf launch at the cape.  You won't have trouble at PC.  There's hardly any rocks to hit in PC!  Just remember how to kayak, you'll be fine.

Going through the hole at Depoe Bay is fun too though.  Hmmm, decisions.

I'll be down in Port Orford if you want to drive a long way south.

Right on, looking forward to it!  This'll be an exploratory trip for me as I've never paddled out of Depoe before (or any OR port for that matter), so I apologize in advance if I end up asking 1000 questions while we're out there  :).

Copy that, I'll leave the salmon stuff at home then.  Minus a couple of barbless leaders for my herring of course  :).

Ha, that's true.  But I don't wanna get cocky and end up as a yardsale.  Shooting the Depoe hole looks pretty cool.

The rocks outside of Port Orford look really fishy to me.  I fished off the little jetty there once several years ago and did surprisingly well on jumbo blacks.  I can only imagine how good the kayak fishing could be out there.  I might hit that area sometime later this year, but in the meantime I want to see what's in my backyard first.  Thanks for the invite Doug.

No problem. I don't go to Depoe very much so we can explore together. I think I've been out there a total of 5 or 6 times.

You need to read the salmon regulations issued 4/11.  The saltwater seasons were drastically reduced and there are places where you can retain only hatchery fish.

I'll be down in Port Orford if you want to drive a long way south.

I'll be greeting some folks here on Sunday - and getting pictures of a newbie's first outing for posterity.
The fish bite twice a day - just before we get here and right after we leave.

I did.  Depoe Bay is currently open to retention of all salmon except coho, and Chinook don't need to be clipped.  But thanks for the reminder.

28" minimum, right?   Depoe bay usually has a fish checker greeting boats at the dock.

I am seeing 24" in all the PDF's...

Roger's right.  Regulations say 24" minimum size state-wide.

Thanks for this thread!  I've also been eyeing DB on Sunday for my first salt-run of the year.  Still in process of determining if I'm going to burn some family goodwill by fishing on Easter, however... You might see me out there (red revo 13) if I decide to be selfish :-).  What time are you (@clayman and @captain redbeard) thinking to launch?

I've only been to DB 3 times so am also not bringing a wealth of experience, though, would be nice to compare notes and I'm trying to up my safety game as I typically go alone...

Yep 24" minimum for Depoe Bay
but here's where I read the 28" minimum, so you know I wasn't dreaming:

Hope you can make it!  I'll probably get up to the launch around 0700 Sunday morning, as long as I get my stuff ready early enough.  But from the looks of the forecast, it should be fishable all day and conditions will mellow out even more into the afternoon, so there's probably no need to get there at first light.

What radio channel do guys normally use out of Depoe?

You may know this but... before shooting the hole, use channel 80 to give a shout out that you are headed through to make sure it's clear (e.g. "kayak outbound depoe bay") - incoming has right of way.  Since I typically go alone, I usually just stay on that channel and listen to chatter from the whale-watching boats and others.  Though, I'd go to a less congested channel to talk to fellow nwka'ers.

Yeah, 7am sounds reasonable.  I'd be coming from SW Portland - kayak fishing is one of the few things I'll get up at 4am for  :)

I'll let you know once I make a definitive go/no-go.

Awesome, thanks for the info.  I knew there was something along the lines of calling the harbor master about entry/exit, but didn't know the channel.  Thanks!  Back in NorCal, kayakers often used channel 69 for casual comms.  But I'm not sure if that's a thing up here or not.
