Just passed my FAA part 107 drone knowledge exam!  Now I can apply to be a commercial drone operator.  Lol.

Congrats on passing the exam.  I look forward to seeing more drone footage from you guys and gals up north.  So far the footage looks amazing.  I really enjoy shooting video and editing it almost as much as fishing (almost).  When I get home after a trip and after I get cleaned up the first thing I do is go through the footage from the day and start putting it together.  I am by no means an expert and I know I have a long ways to go to get up to the level of some others on here but I still enjoy it and as with anything else in life, practice makes perfect.  That being said I don't know I could do drone photography.  With my go pro I just have to hit a button and start filming.  With a drone there's a lot more to concentrate on.  Also, like you, I know I'd be just a matter of time and it'd be in the drink.  $500 down the drain.  I already put a $500 Hobie seat down to the bottom of a lake, I'd hate to do the same with a $500 drone.

My brother and I played briefly with his DJI Mavic last week.   Running from his smartphone lets him know where the FAA restricted airspace gets in the way.

Took a few minutes to figure out how to recalibrate the cameras after a firmware update but it was simple to perform.

Here's another test footage of the drone's potential. I can already see an upgrade in the works.

Like Tinker mentioned, the rules are complicated.   I can choose whether to fly as a hobbyist or under Part 107 as a commercial license.

For example, in this footage, at the time, I coukd only fly as a hobbyist since this is class E airspace to the surface.  All i have to do is call and notify the airports within a 5 mile radius.

I did apply for a part 107 airspace waiver for commercial flights but that could be 90 days away though this area has been pre cleared for lower level flights.

At any rate, I still suck at flying but I can see the potential...
