This is from communication with odfw. You won't need a descending device - rigged or even on board - if you're within 30 fathoms(180 feet)

wow,  that's interesting.   maybe they need to update the reg's to clarify this.   Thanks for posting this.

Interesting.  But am I the only one who is confused by this answer?  Because the way the regulations are written, I interpret it as needing a descending device when fishing for bottomfish regardless of depth, but am only required to use it when fishing beyond 30 fathoms.  This is from the ODFW Marine Zone regulations page:

Any vessel fishing for, or possessing, bottomfish (groundfish) in the ocean must have a functional descending device onboard, and the device must be used when releasing any rockfish outside of 30 fathoms. A functional descending device is one that is ready to be used.

IMO, they need to clean up the language here to clarify that you only need the device when fishing beyond 30 fathoms.  Either way, I'll still have my descending device onboard for Depoe tomorrow.

That's bad information. Both on the descender and on canary rockfish. Canaries are not part of the sublimit.

I agree, that is bad information, you must carry the descender regardless of ocean depth at your present location.  Or for example back at the launch being checked.

Of the 7-fish marine daily bag limit, no more than the number below are allowed:

    NEW— 6 black rockfish
NEW— 4 blue/deacon, China, copper, or quillback rockfish combined
NEW— There is no longer a sub-bag limit for canary rockfish
1 cabezon during open season (July 1- December 31)

this was from the ODFW website.   They also removed the "length limit" for Greenling.

Regs were written in a way that made me unsure so I emailed the contact email with questions - specifically about nearshore fishing in less than 30 fathoms and sub bag limits. I wanted to make sure I was within the rules. Just sharing odfw's response with y'all.

And we're just correcting it before anyone gets cited.

I've gotten conflicting information from ODFW in the past.  The best source is to contact the OSP Fisheries Division, here: https://www.oregon.gov/osp/FW/pages/f_w_personnel.aspx

Although I agree that the best source of info to avoid being cited would be from the OSP Fisheries Division, however I strongly feel that the ODFW really needs to get their info straightened out, easily understood by anyone reading it, and put it all in ONE location on their website.

Right now we have these pages that we have to visit to fully understand what we can fish for, when we can fish for them, where we can fish for them, and how we can fish for them.

Ridiculous!!   >:(

You're right, of course.  I always agree with you on that point.
