Yesterday me and a buddy got out. We went to a place that is really tough to get to but protected well from the north so it's worth the work. A lot of you know the place but I'm not going to name it. When we finally made it to the place I normally launch we saw that the surf was pretty sporty. We almost didn't launch, but after watching it for a while we decided that we could do it. We were thinking since the swells were to get smaller throughout the day coming back in may not be too bad. We made it out. The fishing was great!
On the way back in around 5 we noticed the surf was still pretty good sized. We got as close as we could, watched the sets then made our paddle for the beach. Before we started to paddle I was telling my buddy to be sure and broach the waves or he'd get taken out. In the surf zone I was able to broach and barely stay balanced! There was some good ones! I thought I made it! The last couple sets seemed small enough that I could ride them straight in. I thought wrong. The wave broke under me, the tip of my kayak went into to water and the back went over me head. It reminded me of going over the handle bars on a bike when I was a kid I was able to right my kayak and just held on to it until I got shoved all the way to the beach.
I kept looking over to my buddy worried if he'd eat it too, but he didn't he stayed upright and was excited! He came running over to me gave me a huge high five and said "I Fu$&n broached dude!" It was hilarious and I was so happy that he had a great experience! Him running up all excited that he made it and I didn't was the highlight of my day! I'll hear about this at work for quite some time. Said broach about 50 times 50 different ways on the way home, mostly in like a California surfer accent.
"You shoulda broached, dude."

Nice write up. TY for sharing!

So I have a Q? from a newbie. What happens to your gear when you eat it on exit? Searching the surf line for poles and gear? Or is everything bungied in?

I may have miss spelled it, or even miss used the terminology all together but on some of the surf landing videos I sent him he said the guy was calling being sideways on wave using your paddle to balance broaching. We were making jokes about it on the walk to the launch, and like I said he wouldn't stop saying on the way home. [emoji847]

Haha, nice.  Most people call it bracing - very effective technique for staying above the water on a surf landing.   Why did you guys launch from the north side of the Cape?

I had everything strapped in, so I didn't loose much this time. I did make the mistake of leaving my pole in the pole holder behind my seat. It was tethered but got ripped off along with the rod holder. I knew that was a risk but didn't think it would happen. It was my favorite rod and reel. One less mistake I'll make in the future. I'm considering a helmet for those sporty days now too.

FWIW, broaching in this case is sliding the kayak sideways on the leading edge of a wave. Bracing is putting the paddle in the water for added stability. When broaching, sliding sideways in front of a wave, the paddler braces into the wave.

Obviously, I need to get on the water...
