Late post...

My wife and son normally stay home on Mondays, it just so happened that I had this past Monday off for Columbus Day.  This particular Monday my wife had some work she needed to get done so I was given Owen duty for the day.  Rather than going to the playground or the zoo with Owen like I normally would, I decided to take him fishing.  So I loaded up the Volvo with my fishing gear, my son's gear, and tossed the new Trident 13 on top and headed out to Henry Hagg Lake.

When we got to the lake we found it was a bit chilly, but the lake was just about empty. Well, I unloaded the trunk of the car and noticed that in my haste to leave I manged to pack my fishing rod on the bottom of all the gear and it was now a three piece rod.  This was the same rod I used last weekend to catch a bunch of panfish at Silver Lake and I'm sad to see it go.  Well, I figured I would just have to share Owen's rod then.

I dressed Owen up in the wetsuit Spot gave me for him (thanks again Mark). It's a little large, but I simply threw it on over a pair of his fleece pajamas.  That and with his dinosaur rain coat on top it seemed to do a good job of keeping him warm.  We trolled a bit for trout, but most of the action (all three of the other boats) where out in the middle of the lake and I decided I'd rather stay fairly close to shore just in case Owen gets antsy.  We paddled over to a cove and I marked some small fish so we dropped a bit of worm down and Owen managed to catch a few small perch.

Well, this was day one of what I'm now referring to as being a "stay at home on the lake dad" and I had a really good time despite only catching a few tiny fish.

That's what it's about, man. Nice story to complement what was surely an epic day on the water......

Way to go Brian.  You can't spend too much time with your kids.  That IS what it's all about.....

BTW, the "rod pod" on the Trident makes a decent kids seat.  It was nice and wide with enough give to be comfortable for him either facing me (like in the photos) or facing forward while we were moving or so that he could push the buttons on my fish finder.

One of these days I want to try out the OK Peekaboo kayak.  It's basically designed for taking small children out with you and even has  a see through window on the bottom of the hull.  Owen would so love something like that.

My hope is be able to take him out enough that he simply remembers the highlights of each trip and not just that one day he got to go fishing with me.

He already does ask me to go fishing ALL THE TIME.  I guess I should look into getting a lawyer soon.

damn, do they make those in adult sizes? Aiden had the frog boots when he was younger, but these are sweet, and I could use new boots.

my bad on the fringe misidentification.

Common mistake, I've made it myself many times recently.  I find when it comes to the whole dinosaur versus dragon thing the key difference to look for is the wings.  Fire is also a good give away, but it's not always evident right away.

As for adult sizes in the dinosaur boots, I'm afraid you're out of luck.  Too bad, I really think they're missing out on a huge potential market.

Brian, seeing those photos makes me regret never having any kids to take fishing. I did however used to take my Golden, Elwood, all the time in my 12ft aluminum boat. He really loved it, and was a great fishing buddy. I don't think any of the current furkids would enjoy it very much.

I am sure your son will remember these times the rest of his life!
