I found a few old threads but nothing that I could find recent.  I purchased a Standard Horizon HX300 which I promptly lost.  :(  I then purchased two Uniden Atlantis 150's which I had to return because the battery life was abysmal.  I'm inclined to pick up another HX300 except that I need to get two so we both have one and they're not super cheap.  I do think it would be worth it for a reliable radio, however.  Thoughts/suggestions?
Kayaking without wearing a PFD is like drunk driving.  You can get away with it for a while, but eventually someone dies.

I am looking at getting a spare radio for a back up and I was looking at both the cobra 350 and the standard Horizon 300.  Both float and they both have similar features.  Right now at Cabela's the cobra is $110 and it has a $15 mailing rebate and the Standard Horizon is $120 and has a $20 mailing rebate.  As far as price, just remember, you get what you pay for which it sounds like you found out once already.  Also, as soon as you get your new radio, make a leash and leash it to you. 😉

That's why I got the HX300 in the first place.  I even made it a nice leash.  Turns out leashes only work if they're attached on BOTH ends.  Have you used either model?  My only concerns are battery life and durability.  Floating shouldn't really matter because I learned how leashes work. :)

I have the HX290, I'm not sure the diff between it and the HX300 except it is about $10 more.  It floats and battery life is good for a long day on the water of monitoring and occasional transmits.  However, if you let the contacts on the battery get a little corrosion, a replacement battery is $45. I don't have experience with either.  I am going off of online reviews only.  I do have a couple of other Standard Horizon products.  One works really well (HX830 I think) the other is kind of cheap.  They are the 2 pack of HX100 radios.  I picked them up for about $100 onsale.  One radio in the 2 pack will last all day, the other only lasts about 3 or 4 hours.  Again, you get what you pay for.  I basically just use them for HOW events now.  I'll probably end up getting the HX300.

I've been happy with my HX300. The nice thing about it above others is charging via USB.

Drifter..agreed as I am in the same "boat" as you.  I just pulled the trigger on the HX300.  I figured a $20 mail in rebate and free Father's Day shipping at Cabellas was as a good time as any!

I liked the HX300 for the brief period that I had it.  Just remember to actually use the lanyard. :)  So surprise to me, I got an early Father's Day gift last night of an HX290.  I have a feeling someone was snooping my NWKA posts.  So far I really like it.  It's quite a bit bigger, not obnoxiously so, but definitely noticeable, compared to the HX300 but it comes with DC and AC chargers and the base itself mounts very securely (you can pick it up upside down by the base without worry of it coming loose).

Congratulations on the early Father's Day gift.  After reading your original post I was definitely going to take your advise.  When I ordered my radio I also purchased a few retractable lanyards just to be on the safe side.  Now if I could just decide on my immersion choice.[emoji848]

I know you've made (been given) your choice. :-)  Just want to mention I picked a Standard Horizon HX 870 because I didn't have GPS in my FF. I like the 1, 2.5 and 6 Watt transmit choices. After a week of fishing with the radio on an average of 10 hours/day, several transmissions/day, GPS use too, I found battery usage was less than 10% of capacity. Recharge via 12V outlet in my van was simple, convenient. GPS isn't terribly accurate, though it brings me back within a couple hundred yards of a mark. FWIW.
