Hi from Oregon city, I recently (April) received a new 12' Hobie PA for my birthday and went nut getting it set up and learning to fish out of it. I regularly bring home limits of kokanee ( down rigger) and recently finished getting the last of my gear to head to the salt and have been bottom fishing the last couple weeks in preparation for the rock fish classic. I am a automotive tech in Oregon city. I guess I am a old guy according to AARP, and have been married for 30 years with a grown kid in the Army. I would love to learn how to catch salmon soon so if anyone's heading out I hope you give me a shout so I can tag along.

Welcome and congrats on the PA.  Folks will sometimes post up open invites for fishing so keep an eye out for those.  You just missed a big outing to Pacific City this morning.

It sounds like you are coming to ORC. There is salmon fishing available in the river located at camp.

It turns out it was probably in the right area at the right time, I started out early and had the ocean to myself and the power boat guys for most of the morning and had a blast catching lings and blacks and a monster 28" cabbie. When I finally did see a couple kayakers I drifted down to say Hi . It turns out it was their first time on the ocean in kayaks and I noticed boot foot waders on both of them and mentioned that may not be a good idea. As one of them cracked a beer I thought "another bad idea" we fished and talked for a bit made another drift and they split up and one followed me , yep another bad idea. We got into a couple fish and while the drinker was trying to put a fish into a bag strapped onto the top of his kayak "it came alive" alcohol and inexperience combined and from behind me I hear a loud splash and turned around in time to see the panic setting in as his waders started to fill with 46* water and he started yelling for help. He was able to scramble up onto the bottom of his kayak and stop taking water into the waders as I calmed him down and talked him through what to do and I notice his paddle floating away (wtf no leash!!) I recommend to use a rod leash and pull it over for him from my boat while he holds on but he decided to roll it by pulling his tracking fin and under he went again filling his waders with more water. Then he took the opposite rail of the kayak to the face trying to pull himself straight up, now his buddy has noticed the problem and has finally shown up to help and by him holding the other side and using my kayak he was able to climb in to his kayak , very wet and exhausted. I noticed he was sitting quite low in the water and recommended he open a hatch and check since he would not be able to get back in the kayak if he was swamped on the way in, it turns out there was a lot of water inside the kayak and surprise no pump.  I shared my pump and got him squared away and heading in. I saw them at the boat ramp hauling out and they both agreed the waders were a really bad idea and that had I not been there it could have turned out very differently. So while I am a little bummed I missed the group at pacific city I think I was supposed to be in Depoe Bay that day

Well done - you changed the script on what could have been a disaster.

Sounds like fate put you in the right spot.  Especially for that gentleman.  I hope they were very accepting of the wisdom that you passed on to them.

Good job coaching and rescuing. I've had my fair share of pulling people out of the ocean. Most of them using waders and a rain coat. Main thing is to calm them down first. You did a great job! If you are fishing depoe this weekend I hope to meet you. Insayn and I are leaving to depoe from Forestgrove at 3am tomorrow.

Thank you, this was my first time coaching someone in that situation. I am definitely planning on attending the rockfish classic, I leave to head over on Thursday early and get camp set up and look forward to meeting everyone and hopefully get a line wet.

I've always wondered what the purpose of buddying up for safeties sake was in kayaks.. You may have changed my mind on how helpful another person (even in a kayak) can be in the case of a rescue. I always thought someone overturned panicking would put 2 people in the water instead of just themselves.
Awesome job helping out and having the gear to lend and make a bad situation a lot less crappy!
They might sound ill advised, but when I tell folks of my exploits, it's rare I don't find them smiling
