I was at the aircraft electronics association regional meeting in reno this past week...I was wandering around and looking at some of the vendor booths and what not...and i ran across Kannad...Kannad is an up and coming ELT, PLB, and EPIRB manufacturer that has a pretty good set of products at the moment...He had at the booth a PLB made by them.  Kannad 406 XS-3 GPS operates on 406 frequency for cospas and broadcasts a gps position that is updated every 20 minutes. It also broadcasts a 121.5 homing frequency which as of February 1st will no longer be monitored by cospas.  But it can still be used in direction finding (hopefully it wouldn't be very necessary with gps position.)  Now it is a bit expensive at $539 but i know for some of you who take long excursions by yourself or with very few others in extreme conditions and/or secluded areas seems like a good idea to me. Oh ya buy the way it floats, its waterproof to 10 meters, shock proof, and works in very cold temperatures. I've seen a few people post about these types of devices and just thought i would let you know what i found. oh and 5 year warranty.

heres a link http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/avpages/kannad406xs.php

by the way i don't work for them or anything i just have never seen one with built in gps. the ones i have seen you have to hook to a gps to do position which is useless for yaks in most cases. its sort of expensive but as far as i am concerned i think it would pay for itself if you had to use it lol

i haven't done a lot of research on these things so maybe there are cheaper ones but i saw this one in particular and thought it was pretty cool

oh and one more thing...NO SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE for cospas which is sweet...so blows the spot system out of the water as far as i am concerned

Speaking of PLB's (personal locator beacon's ?)

What ever happened to new Marine VHF's having gps's that transmitted your location automatically? I thought that was supposed to be a requirement or something, or did I just imagine that?

PLB= Personal Locator Beacon

as far as a requirement i am not sure about that but i have not done any research into that

i think i remember seeing the option for that on some handhelds but they have to be interfaced with a separate gps.

but personally i kinda like the idea of a device attached to me

on the other hand if you could get everything in one package that would be nice also
