Tinker, I think the one on page 36 is called a triple rod holder (item "I" on page 47) and is apparently a centre mount design.  So it wouldn't work with the mirage drive.  But yes, general concept to have gear mounted across the cockpit area.  I think you've mistaken the foot braces on the kayak for gear tracks.  I suppose a person could rig it to mount in the mast hole on the oasis (assuming they did not use a sail).

...This is the Scotty catalogue and on page 13 there is a kayak with a "table"spanning its width. Is this what you mean?

Chromer, Yes this is very similar to what I was thinking.  Aside from the photo, I don't see it as an offered item in the catalogue.  In the photo, it is mounted near the persons feet and appears high enough to clear the mirage drive system.  Not crazy about all the bolts hanging down from it (easy enough to rectify) but this is the basic idea.  I also don't care for the 90 degree angles from table to upright supports (seems like a weak point to me but I could be wrong).

Pros:
Gear is well out of the way so it wouldn't matter what side of the boat you fell out.
Gear is well out of the way so entry back onto the boat is not limited.
Gear on short leashes attached to it are also out of the way and as such, less of a danger.

Cons:
Gear is out of the way... (FF viewing may be difficult, quick access to a rod may prove difficult, ???).
Gear is a little higher and may possibly create difficulty in righting an upside down boat (as Tinker mentioned).

Sorry I missed your post Mojo.  I was really close to picking up a used Big Tuna.  The used Oasis was available and reasonably priced so I went with it.  The Hobie is also what sold me on the idea of ditching my canoe and buying a kayak.  However, I "really like" the way the Big Tuna converts for solo use.

Now that people are able to see the general idea of my thoughts on this...  opinions please!  Is there a reason this is not more popular within the kayak fishing community?

Can you reach that far beyond the end of your toes?  Most guys I know don't have that kind of flexibility.  I just imagine trying to deploy a downrigger ball or grab the clip and my rod and all the motions I do for Kokanee fishing and that table setup just wouldn't work for me doing all that down by my toes. If you're in a paddle kayak- forget about paddling while you're working on the table....it helps to have forward motion when deploying a down rigger.  Do you have good eyesight to see that distance to the size fishfinder you have?

Definitely wouldn't move that table any closer to the cockpit since it would obstruct reentry.

Thanks, I went back and finally found it on page 17.  The one on page 36 is attached to a track if you look at it closely.  It's on a pedestal that attaches to a single track on the deck - not a very practical design.

If no one mentioned this one, NuCanoe makes a slide mounted console:  https://www.nucanoe.com/pursuit-accessories/slide-mounts/

Not suggesting either of these would work, but the idea of a console on tracks so it moves move closer to you then out of the way seems to make sense.  And would solve the "real men can't reach their toes" issue...   >:D

The fish bite twice a day - just before we get here and right after we leave.
