As a new truck owner, I'm also in the position of trying to figure out what arrangement is best for me.  Why do I not see many people putting a rack on the cab?  The last thing I need is a rack on the back, extending the kayak beyond my already lengthy truck.

I had a Yakima rack mounted over the cab of my Tundra.  It worked well, but had a couple things I didn't like about it.  It seemed no matter how tight you got the clamps they would slide back while driving and it would scratch the paint where the clips grabbed the gutter.  I also didn't like after loading the kayaks upside down how any residual water would drip down the windows.

I also have a new to me truck.  I just ordered a Tracrac SR ladder rack that will work with a tonneau cover. It's mounted on tracks that are secured into the stake pocket holes. I think it's a better setup, adjustable, and easily removed.  You can also get a cantilever rack for it that goes over the cab if you wanted to shift the load forward or for a longer load.  I liked that the crossbars are 69 inches also for hauling 2 outbacks upside down.

I also put a rack on the roof of my teardrop trailer, so I could bring one kayak without putting it all the way up on the rack, or actually bring two if I wanted to. Pointless, really, since the teardrop sleeps but one.

My concern with the truck rack was not making it removable, but keeping someone from removing it. I decided loctite on the bolts would do the job well enough. If they bring the right tools, they can have it, I guess.

As of now, I have ORC a top priority for me next summer.  But I'll need a rack before then so I can bring my kayak up!   ;)

I’m putting my 84 bronco back together this week, and painting the HOW NOC trailer next week, but I can pencil you in any time after that.... unless I’m fishing  ;D. I got two extra boats if I am fishing and you want to join  :banjo:
