Conditions were a little lumpier (Sunday the 9th) then when we had the P.C.  tourney in September  :o the pic's really don't do it justice.. there were breaking waves all the way out to the rock!!

I understand there is supposed to be a good reef break inside of the rock towards the point under "good" conditions.  Y'all can keep them. :o

On the other hand it does mark the reef so you can find it when Lake Pacific makes an appearance again.

It seems at least one kayak angler out there is looking forward to these conditions..

Were you kayak fishing this day?

I had a couple of ocean fishing days when it was 6-8ft+ but with a long period last year.  Seems like the fish hunker down with that much water moving around.  Wish I'd had a VHF at the time so I'd have been able to chat with the CG chopper that stopped for a rather long visual assessment of my mental and physical well being.

I'm a little skepticle of Jason's comment:
"Swell is predicted to be around 14 ft, with a period of 8 to 13 seconds. Winds will be out of the South at 25mph, and rain is likely. With a high temp of 52, this may not seam ideal for most people, but it will be nasty with 14 ft waves and high winds....exactly what I've been wanting to get pictures and video of the Prowler Trident getting rocked in."
I look forward to the footage but I'm willing to bet they'll limit their activities to the inside sand-bars.  If not, Jason, I owe you a beer and wheelbarrow to haul your nuts around in.

Yeah, I've had the same experience as Spot when it comes to rockfish. When the swell gets going and there's a lot of turbulence the fish go deep and hold out.

I've been out in 10 ft 10 sec before and I can believe a decent paddler could handle a bit more.  I thought it was more like 6-8 ft and 12 sec until I got out there and watched my fish finder do the following.. 25 ft - (5 sec) -15 ft - (5 sec) - 26 ft - (5 sec) - 16 ft etc..   Fishing of course is impossible and landing on the steep beach break was interesting.   I'll be interested in seeing the video.  BTW, Jason is offering up his friend to do the paddling while he stays back to do the camera work.  Check out the next paragraph..

This will be the day I get Dave White and Paul Kuthe, from the sea kayak movie "Pacific Horizons" to prove a point; It's not the boat. People always say they can't do this or that in a particular type of kayak, especialy a big sit-on-top like the Prowler. Next weeks post will prove that theory incorrect.

There was no way I was fishing, just stopped by for a pic on the way back from picking some mushrooms.  No way any yakers were out that day.  The surfers (you can see one, little black speck in the lower right of the pic) were getting pummeled pretty good.   What was the noaa forecast for Sunday??

So I just returned prom Pacific city with my tail between my legs. Monday I launched below the 101 bridge and trolled down to the mouth.

timing was off, and I hit the jaws of the nestucca at max ebb....and found about 5 knots of current, and a sweet little tide race to play on. I punched out the jaws backwards in my sea kayak, and ferried as hard as I could towards the beach.

I barely escaped a pummeling. The waves were much steeper and dumpier than i had expected. I tried to fish outside the break for a bit, but it was just to much work and not enough fun.

Tuesday was freaking wicked. It's not that the swell was to big...I like big swell, but the waves were vertical, dumping, and the wind was ripping at 40mph.

I like action, but I like staying alive too! we hauled boats to the beach, tried to figure how we were going to get out and if it would be fun or just an a** whipping....and bagged out. not worth surfing, and definitely not worth fishing.

I'll post a complete trip report with pics on my blog.

I'll get the prowler out in the action here real soon. Sorry to talk smack and then disappoint!

Hey Jason,

No need to apologize!  We all love the anticipation of a good @$$ whoopin!   ;D  You've got nutz just crossing that bar....  I look forward to your report,

BTW: The stretch of peaks from the rock to the river mouth is called Gas Chambers.  It's known for its fast, hollow waves and exposure to wind.  The place is unreal at 6'.

Having been face to face with 15' on a surfboard built for the job I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens when it's attempted on an SOT.  Let us know when you might try for a re-match!!!

I like a good beat down as much as the next guy, especially when it's someone who's been talking smack!

The gas chambers....It's a fitting name. Some of my friends from Alder Creek were surfing kayaks by the pub on Monday. I think they got it handed to them a few times.

I'll get that prowler into some action soon, but I'll wait for a big wave day when the chance of death is minimal rather than probable. ;)
