Herring

I had some commitments in Newport on Monday, but managed to squeeze in a couple hours to jig some herring.  Launched from south beach since the Hatfield Marine Center launch looked too muddy.  Caught 40 in a couple hours on the incoming tide in the main channel by the green can north of the NOAA dock.  Mostly green label size.  I tossed them in a salt slurry with ice and sea water and they were frozen solid with most of the scales entact.  Nice baits.  Good Fun.

That sounds like a heck of a lot of fun and worthwhile to boot.

Right on Barb, I'd heard tales of a good herring bite in the bay lately.  Those look green- and blue-label size, is that true?  If the ocean's blown this weekend, I'd like to stock up on some quality salmon bait.

mostly green, some red but the reds were most prone to falling off the sabiki before I could get them to the kayak.
A few escaped through the mirage drive well.  I was at about 50% catch/cooler ratio.  Only 1 shad, the rest were herring. 
Dead drift, 5oz lead, hardly any jigging motion.
