As fun as many of those ideas sound...they also sound very very demanding from administration stand point which is probably one of the reasons they wanted to keep it simple in the first place....However Pelagic Paddler's solution seems the simplest and easiest to manage...not to mention imo a little more fair

The administration is pretty easy, all the rules are written into the computer code and the code figures out the scores.  So far, nothing mentioned would be impossible.  The hardest part would be coming up with little icons for everything.

Keep the ideas coming.

I'm sure we have enough talented software junkies to be able to make a few icons.....

Little icons...  Couldn't we pillage them from the internet?   I'm sure there's lots of fishy pics we could tweak one way or another to look good.  :icon_thumright:

The current ones are pillaged and tweaked.  The idea of finding several dozen more doesn't sound fun.

My two cents worth. I like the way things stand now, except in a perfect world, there would be two additions. I would add two categories, making a total of twelve. An even dozen! First, I would add flatfish. Halibut, Sole, Flounder ect.. Second, I would make Walleye a separate category, with assigned points more fitting to the size of the average catch. Lets face it, to me, a Walleye is more of a gamefish, and not a panfish. 7 points per inch would be much more fair then 10 points. After all this fish is much more the size of a trout than a bluegill. I have never caught one, and probably never will. This change would create a much more even playing field for us in the lower PNW!

BTW, some Smallie action coming this week!

Absolutely.

Why do we need the icons in the first place?  How about just a linked name in text that takes ya to a picture?

After thought: Maybe that would take the fun out of it, I dunno?

I like pelagic paddler's idea but I think we'd need a few more participants to make it worth while.

Something to keep in mind though is that we don't want the AOTY rules reading like the Washington State fishing regulations.  It should remain accessable to newb's and old salts alike.  Just my .02

Very true!

The rules shouldn't change much, just how the game is programmed to function.

Another idea for a super simple way to play.
Give each fish it's own PPI, and let everyone rackem up based on what and where they fish (within the given boundries of the game).
You could end up with an overall winner that picked away at many species and collected all his points on just average sized fish, or end up with an overall winner that targeted trophy fish and only needed to find 5 or 6 species that netted him the solid points.

Bottomline, and I'm sure several folks would agree that clumping fish together kinda dilutes the potential for points.
If we had the opportunity to gather points for each individual fish then more folks may jump in and play.

I'm looking at making a go at AOTY.

As far as feedback goes, I'm thinking that Cabezon and Rockfish should be separate categories, and that Walleye should definitely be separate from the "panfish" category.

Other thoughts, and they have been covered as well, is the difficulty of the folks in the Inland Empire to participate in ocean fishing.

We're looking at a modifying the AOTY format to make it more competitive across the board. We'll be updating at the end of the year when it's more ironed out.

Yeah, yeah, the whole walleye thing is my fault and I agree...it should be separate.  Maybe drop panfish next year in favor of walleye.

As for the rockfish/cabezon thing.. they both have a similar max size and you really fish for them both at the same time.  The trick is we were trying to keep it to just 10 target species/species groups.

Some of the other ideas on this thread are interesting and worth considering for next year.  We'll let you know what we come up with.  Meanwhile keep the feed back coming.
