wouldn't think so.. just like the cab when the quota was reached or a native steelhead. legal to fish for, just can't retain them.

What about a "legal sturgeon" caught on a catch and release only day? It's legal to target and catch, just not take home.

By the "Could you take it home?" rule, a sturgeon caught on say a Monday wouldn't count.

...and people wonder why I release 99% of my catch.  The fish would be dead before I figured out whether not I could keep it.  That just gave me an idea- we should have a calendar or macro on this site that either clearly illustrates what is currently in season (including restrictions) or allows you to select the species and what lake/bouy/river/stream you intend to fish at see if its legal & its current restrictions.

That sounds like a great idea. However, with all the regulations that are body of water specific, not to mention state specific, not to mention all the short term changes made monthly, I think this would be a nightmare to try to keep up with. I bet those in ODFW and WFDW couldn't even agree as to the actual seasons in their respective states.

If you are going to be adding species crab wouldn't be my first choice.  It seems like big crab are more luck than skill (more so than fin fish anyway).

Crabs would be an interesting add on.. it would get people out to try crabbing off their yak.. especially in the ocean, which I highly recommend! But the difference between a legal crab and a big crab is only a couple 2-3 inches so it might be more of a "check the box" species, at least in oregon. If you crab more than a couple times you will get a big one and past that "man thats a big one size" they don't get much bigger.

I would love to see halibut kept.  From personal stink boat experience there are butts within "adventurous" yak fisherman range and I think it could be a potentially cool yak fishery, Kind of like the salmon shark thing in alaska, lots of nay sayers till someone goes out and makes it happen.

Any opinion from the powers that be on the "wild card fish idea"?

I'll vote for keeping the butts only if P-Paddler promises to not target them without me along.  :)
I think I know the spot(s) you're thinking of and I don't wanna miss it!

either way Spot that sounds like a plan.  They are on my short list.  As is a tuna, but short of a mothership, I think they would be a tough nut. Some sort of mothership live bait/iron thing could be real cool.

I know of these nearshore halibut holes. I also know of someone hooking into one in a kayak.  Regardless of whether Halibut stays in AOTY, we should have a super secret NWKA get together for them this year. ;D

I've caught halibut near shore in OR, but not off a yak. I'm sure it's doable from a yak.
