Sounds like a private subforum might be needed.

Take it to the "secret" forum.   ;)  We'll let PP in as an honorary member ...

Okay, if you're "fishin' for ideas" then I vote... leave halibuts IN; it encourages people to further explore what should certainly be an atainable species.  Leave crabs OUT; whether luck determines who gets a big one is not an issue cause that's the case with EVERY species more or less.  But still, there is not much skill involved at all, it seems to me.  Just set the trap or don't.

And the "could you take it home" rule?  Give me a break!  Are we looking to prove who's the best ANGLER, or are we trying to determine the best fish meat harvester.  If it's supposed to be all about the angler skills (and a little luck) then I say Catch and Release legal needs to count as much as a legally harvested fish.

One more thing... somebody save me the hours of research and/or hiring of an attorney to find it for me... will "tow jobs" be outlawed for a tournament legal catch?  I'm in favor of keeping this a pure human powered boat tournament myself.  In "Fishin-T World", that would mean sailboats are out as well.

You must have been reading minds, except like a week before  royg(blutrident) thought of it... He was wondering about mothershipping for the purpose of targeting AOTY fish? with the fish being hooked, played and landed on the Yak. I know we've had this debate about doing it in general, but what about for points?

See ya on the water..

I've watched a few arguments on the different forums concerning the topic of "motherships" and whether that's acceptable or not and I haven't previously weighed in on any of those discussions before because they always seemed pretty silly to me.  About as silly as declaring that anyone that uses a line weight of more than 20# is just not sporting... well, it depends on just what you're trying to do!  Or maybe whether or not a car should be used to get to the launch site.

But now it's just a little bit different because we're talkin' about a contest now, and rules have gotta be rules and all.  And there are normally certain reasons for different rules and they usually have mostly to do with defining just how it is that most of the potential contestants would like to define their sport.

Me personally, I'm feeling like this particular contest should be about two main things:  Fishing and kayaking.  Or more specifically, one main thing:  kayak fishing (ie. fishing FROM a kayak).  To me, motor boating to a likely spot and then sitting on the kayak to hook and land a fish kinda takes away from the pure kayaking side of it, but motor car travel to the launch site really really doesn't.  But I'll be the first to say "that's just me".  The main thing is to try to have all of the rules in place and to agree to all the rules before the game is under way.  Long as the rules stay put and are the same for all contestants, that's fair enough for me.

Thanks Paul!  Honestly, I'm not sure....  but if I remember the AOTY threads correctly, it's another kayak and maybe a statue a la Zeelander.   ;D  I'll be able to get the whole clan on the water now!   ;D

You missed me didn't you Roy?   :-*

As for mothershipping:  I like the idea, but not for the AOTY.

I  agree with you  and Spot on this T.  since i just noticed that Halibut isn't on the list this year, a mute point i guess, since that's all you would really need it for, maybe big cod deep.

It would be fun to do, just for the adventure.

No Butts this year... bummer.. They are still on the top of my list for this year..  I normally only fish the yak in the salt/coastal rivers so this years AOTY will force me to fish the fresh water in the yak.

I have done the surf perch thing with the yak and it does work.  I have tried two test runs got one each trip (missed several other bites, bait stealing buggers!).  I used my light steelhead spin gear with sand shrimp on a sliding egg sinker.  Sit back behind the last breaking wave  and cast into the back of the surf.  Needs some fine tuning and more exploring but it works..  Just make sure you are back far enough behind the "last" wave.. don't ask how I know this

If you can find a rip along a suitable rock wall, you can score.  Find a spot where the rip leaves a channel and cast toward shore then mend your line as it drifts with the rip.  I've done well for BIG surf perch in these areas.  Holding position can be tricky though.  Definitely a Perch Fishing 301 kind of exercise.

Thre seems to be a little confusion here.  There are two AOTY programs that I help run. The original was for the NCKA group down in NorCal and their list still includes halibut.  http://aoty.ncka.org/user

Our AOTY came a little later and the new rules don't include halibut this year.
