Since we’re almost at springer season in the Tillamook bay and the Nehalem (seen one PB trolling the ghosts hole yesterday and today) I’m thinking a salmon trolling video is in order?!?

Everyone say it with “Spot the salmon!” “Spot the salmon!” “Spot the salmon!” “Spot the salmon!”  “Spot the salmon!” “Spot the salmon!”

On the list. As are ones for targeting Springers in specific venues. Any others?

I always appreciate your tutorial on brining herring.  How about a tutorial on how to put the herring on a hook (Whole Herring and Cut Plug --without using the dick nite sure spin helmet... there are some that don't use helmets)

Spot, great detail in your video to get folks steered in the right direction.

When you held up your curly tail grubs, it appeared that you had the hook facing up and the grub attached with the tail facing up as well.  Do you ever have issues with the tail getting stuck to the hook that way?

I started out attaching my grubs with the tail up like that too, as it just looks right. However, when jigging in the upstroke, the hook can get swept right into the path of the tail and snag it, rending it useless.  Since then, I have flipped the grub to aim the tail downward behind the hook so it never has a chance to get snagged on the hook.

If you are halibut fishing in the sound or straight (areas 5 and up), do your hooks need to be barbless?  I swore I saw an exception to that somewhere for halibut, but now I can't find it, so I may have made it all up in my head.

Interestingly, I've had that issue but never thought about the reason.  Thanks for the info!  I'll start paying attention to that.

Interesting...  I can't find any exception for halibut in areas 5-13.  If you find this, let me know.

Thanks!

Yes, barbless hooks only in Areas 5-13 for Halibut.  A sharp circle hook might be the best bet in these areas.

As per the WDFW regs page 98

Marine Area Rules

Tackle/Gear Rules.

Barbless hooks - are required for all
species in Marine Areas 5-13, except forage
fish jig gear. When fishing for SALMON in Areas
1-13, single-point barbless hooks must be used.

Thanks for the input.  I probably made that up in my head.  I have only been fishing in Washington for a short time, so I probably misread or misremembered something in that 150 page rule book.  I certainly don't want to be on the wrong end of any rules.

That is a sweet setup for managing the fish. I tend to go on the simple side with a harpoon and a Scotty downrigger snubber to a bouy, mostly to avoid untangling lines. I might have to add to my gear list after this.

Sorry Mark but I might just go to my grave with that being my best fishing memory

I didn't mean to diminish the accomplishment.  You put everyone else to shame that day. Definitely a worthy best fishing memory.
