for sure, being able to identify yourself with a boat name makes radio communication with the CG much more fun. <snip>

Oh geez. Radio communication? Another unforeseen expense. Any idea where I could get a cheap used one?
Ok I’ll just belly on up and say it.... “cheap” ?! What’s your life worth? Please don’t take safety gear as a “how cheap can I get it” just my $0.02 <snip>

LOL you're absolutely right. I'm more annoyed with myself for not anticipating that I would need something so important. It's probably a good thing my kayak isn't arriving soon. Which one do you use? I'm getting conflicting information from website vs. Amazon reviews.
Try to convince my wife of that first part will ya!!?? I’m at home and it’s hanging in the shop, I’ll look tomorrow and post up a picture, I got it at England Marine in Warrenton,  traded it in once for a warranty issue straight swap and they told me to keep the second charger. That was 3-4 years ago and it still works fine.

I do name mine but I do not have their names on them (I probably should).
As far as your choices for names, I like Serenity.  That was such a good show.  I can't believe how short lived it was.

He might name it “ what did I get myself into” or “holly shit this is expensive” (just remember take care of your gear and it should last a long time) it’s only expensive to get into this sport maintenance is cheap and the key to long gear life.

There have been a lot of discussions about VHF radios around here.  You could try the SEARCH function and see what folks say about the different radio options.

Thanks, Tinker. In fact I did try a search but most likely wasn't on the main forum page when I did it (only ended up searching the thread I started). I was still annoyed with myself and not really thinking clearly LOL.

After a few hours of research, I ended up going with the Standard Horizon HX300:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AJVXA5W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It floats, has an automatic strobe, good battery life, and a 1 or 5W transmission output. I didn't get a used one after all as to do so would have broken my own rule of never buying used electronic equipment.

Noob Noob, are you in the UK? It looks like the radio you linked doesn't work in the US, although that information is only found in customer reviews and not the product description.

I am doubtful about that, as it ships with a US power cord. The manufacturer website, including the owner's manual says US and International.

I didn't find the reviews you mentioned, but the owner's manual troubleshooting has an entry for "cannot switch between US, Canada, and International frequencies" with a probably cause of user error.

The SH website does have a language preference selector, where you click a Union Jack for English language, and a red meatball flag for Japanese. Maybe some reviewer didn't understand that was just the language selection on the website.

Thanks for pointing that out, Sockeye. In fact I did notice that review before I ordered the radio. Funny because two Amazon customers had rated the review as helpful while a third had commented, "HA HA HA HA**************BULL DINKY+++++." Almost missed the comment myself LOL. IMO Amazon should show all comments already expanded instead of just a little (1) next to the word comments.

On the names of kayaks, I couldn't decide on a name or I would have done it already. I wanted something that matched my little 15' Smokercraft that I named "Epic Minnow" But couldn't think of anything?

On radios, I went with this one, it's been great and didn't break the bank, I also agree with Mojo, attach the radio to yourself. Not your kayak.
