I would be up for the John Day and if you decide to do the Tillamook trip I would be interested, my ocean experience is still minimal but I would love to go. The drive is something for me to consider since I live in ID but that's not a problem, always worth the drive. I have access to a raft or cat and could have room for one, Alex (who is also on the forum) will most likely come over as well and we could fit one more on the raft and some gear (cooler full of food) if we decide to go. Also, what other kind of derby's do you guys have planed? I would love to attend, even if I don't do that well.

Planning for the John Day trip is being done here ... http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/bb/index.php?topic=225.0.  Check in there for the current plans.  Fishin-T is working to put it together.  I think the drive is less than 5 hours from Moscow.

I haven't yet started working on an official NWKA derby yet, but will get on it ... sometime.

OK.  Back to our regularly scheduled show.

Time to get serious about a derby; in fact I feel we're running a bit late on this one.  Where, when, how?  Ideas please!!  Let's get the ball rolling now.

How about Memorial weekend, for halibut? ;D

After the last couple of years' (failed) attempts to get to a derby, I can't promise anything.  :'(

Pete, that sounds like a great idea.  Actually anywhere on the west side of Whidbey would be good.

Hmmm, I know the state parks on Whidbey have group camp setups, but if I recall correctly the groups have to be pretty big- ~100?

Not sure where else to stay?

Come on Bill, are you saying that you don't think we'll have 100 people show up?   ;)

Oh Islander ... any good spot up there on "your" island that you can think of that could accommodate us?

How about a Patterson Lake Perch Derby?

I'm pretty sure I could make it to that!  ::)

Pisco, you know you need an excuse to get over here and hit the saltwater with us.  So I'm just trying to provide one for you.

Hey Allen,

Sounds like your new job sends you to some far flung locations  ;D

The parks up here fill up pretty fast with the reservation system.  I couldn't even get a spot mid-week to take the grandkids camping last summer.  They do have a small (two site) group camp at Bowmans that allows multiple campers, but don't know about times, numbers etc.  I'm sure that info is available on the website though.  One big issue up near the Pass is Tides.  It can really cut down the fishable area in a hurry as you know from experience  :D  The other problem would be openings for species and restrictive limits on bottom fish.  They sure aren't as liberal as last years site out on the straits.  If you hit the Pink run at peak, it could make for some fun fishing though....  Haven't fished Cranberry in years, but it can be pretty good fishing at times.  I think others on this forum have fished it recently.

I'll sure look into anything you need locally and talk to the ranger about launch rights and such.  He knows me pretty well from our last trip Allen  ;)

I'm going for Blackmouth out in Saratoga Passage tomorrow with a buddy in his boat.  It's not kayak fishing, but will post results if you want.

I'm looking for a new kayak seat I can use on both my old prowler and Scrambler XT if anyone has any experience with Surf to Summit etc.....

Something in my back of my mind keeps telling me that a pink salmon derby is second class.  Not that I don't enjoy a fast and furious day hauling on the humpies.   >:D

So I had another idea, actually an old idea suggested from last year.  I've been in contact with the organizers of the big Everett Coho derby.  I'm trying to see if we can have an official "human powered watercraft" division.

The date for this derby is September 22-23 ... http://www.everettcohosalmonderby.com/

I think something like 3000 people total participate in this derby and it would be a great event to "show off".

What do you all think of this idea?

That would be a great way of getting more attention for kayakfishing, IF growing the sport is our intention, and we don't mind the future competition. >:D

I think it would really help our corporate sponsors get exposure. It's one thing to preach to the choir, quite another to convert all the "heathens". Plus it would be fun blowing the minds of all those PBers.  ;D

I fished in the derby, last year, and attended the awards ceremony. The fishing was lousy, but I enjoyed the ceremony; it was a hoot. There were more prizes to give away, than there were fish caught.  :o

I only want to convert a few more heathens so I have a few more people to kayak fish with.  Selfish me.   ::)
