Not sure the rational there but I do know when I go on large  dips in the road- my non curved harbor freight will hit the ground on the dip. When I exit my daughters daycare it is almost always scraping on the ground from exiting the parking lot and entering a road. Doesn’t hurt the kayak but it doesn’t sound great lol.

Ding ding ding... The curved bed extender doesn't scrape nearly as easily as the non curved model. Whether or not it's worth the extra cash is TBD by the buyer.

I don’t recall the brand I bought (still too much blood in my caffeine stream), but it has a straight tube angled upwards. So the vertical tube at the arse end is raised up from the hitch by quite a bit. Not curved like the Boonedox but same effect.  So there are other options to look out for, eh?

That sounds like the Yakima Longarm, which I tried to find but couldn't. Based on this and a bit more research, I went with the Boonedox. Now I just need to go fishing damn it

Thanks Zach (and Matt).  That makes sense to me.  Appreciate it.  I've been eyeing a different extender (also aluminum) but it's a squared-off design.  Now I know better.

The fish bite twice a day - just before we get here and right after we leave.
