I've been threatening to buy a kayak for several months now. My current hesitation is based on the season and weather. There's no real reason why I couldn't or shouldn't buy one right now but I'm curious....is there a time of year where it's just not good for getting out and fishing from the yak?
For the record, I'd be starting off with lakes and rivers but at some point, my goal is to get in some offshore trips as well.

There's an off-season? If you're trying to buy a boat the winter is a great time to pick up used ones.

In Oregon, many of the lakes close Oct31 and reopen in April.  So, that's kind of an "off-season".  There are plenty of water bodies open year round and accessible by kayak.  Plenty of fishing opportunities.

What kind of kayak are you interested in?

I've been dead set on a Hobie Outback but now am also considering a Revo. I know I need to see about testing both of them out because I can't decide. I like the included features of the Outback (rectangle storage bin in front of seat, rails, etc) but seems many love their Revos for offshore. One thing is for certain, I do want the 180 drive, so there's one decision that is final. =)

You need to look at the revo Tyler is selling. It fits what you want. Lots of lakes are still open and can produce large brood trout. Salmon are still available and the ocean season is not too far away and all the practice in lakes and rivers will prepare you for the ocean. Tyler is uplandsandpiper on this forum. It is a killer kayak at a great used price. The new ones are the same model as he is selling

Yeah, I've looked at it and it's still an option. One good thing would be getting in on a used one rather than paying for a full price one right from the start. That would certainly make my wife happier.

If you're just a casual fishing guy I'd buy a used one. Be sure to inspect the sprocket's teeth on the drive making sure they're all there. If you plan on fishing more than an few times a week or doing a lot of miles I'd buy new for the warranty. The 180 drive has some issues with the teeth shearing off, I've put mine into warranty 7 or 8 times in two years. I'm not the only one either, I've talked to hardcore guys on the East Coast and the South whove had the same issue.

I own 2017 and 2019 13' revos. The 16' would definitely be better for the ocean though.

I think workhard is an exception as he seems to put lots of wear on his. Most hobie owners I know have not mentioned quality being an issue.

Not trying to insult workhard he just works really hard at fishing and fishes several times a week in heavy currents. I have never heard of anyone else going through the same issues but I don’t know many that fish as much as he does. One day I hope to fish with workhard so I can see what he is doing differently lol  he certainly brings in the fish.

If you run that drive hard it'll shear off teeth which would require a complete $850 replacement due to the design of the 180. I've found other guys who've had the exact same issue multiple times, it should be a concern for anyone buying the boat.

...and I've just spent tens of thousands of hours on the water.

We thought you lived in your kayak!!! My native propel needed new gears, so parts wear out depending on how hard you push them.
