Yeah, that's the M34.  The M34 and the M36 both float.

There was talk about a distress flag on kayaks, so..how about  an flag pole/vhf  antenna combo... A small permanent mount vhf inside hull, maybe attached to batt box. The mike cord comes outside, small and lite, has all controls on the mike itself. Power draw proably not much difference and would less batteries to deal with.

Wonder if your eyes would glow in the dark when useing 25 watts....

What about a helium filled balloon?  That would get you some elevation, they last for a week, could double as a radar target, and some may be refillable.  Slap on a NWKA sticker and go.

This month's issue of Sea Kayaker magazine reviews 6 VHF's, some with interesting features.  Highlights.

Standard Horizon HX750S: 6W transmission, optional AAA battery pack (6W not supported using AAA batteries), emergency strobe, floats.

Cobra HH425LI: VHF and GMRS radio, optional AA battery pack.

Uniden MHS550: VHF and FRS and AM/FM, optional AAA battery pack.

Not sure if I care about GMRS or FRS.  Not sure floating is very important to me either.  I'll attach little key floats to a VHF if it is.  I'm leaning towards the ICOM M72 as it supports 6W and has one of the bigger capacity batteries(talk time!) on the market.  Compare the 2000 mAH to of the M72 to the 1150 mAH of the HX750S.

I hear that. I was liking the Standard Horizon HX750S since it had so many nice safety features. But with a battery that would last 6 hours... please. The ICOM M72 charged full will last 15-16 hrs!!
