The Magicseaweed surf forecast is looking good for Sunday 03/15 and Monday 03/16. The wind is not perfect, will be an east wind, but light. Is anyone making plans to fish out of Brookings or Sunset Bay? I dont want to be out there by myself. I would be nice to catch a fish and get the bad news off my mind.

I'm off the water until summer (building a big garage/workshop on my lot), but my take on the MSW forecast is that Sunday would be real bumpy out of Sunset Bay, swells that size bounce around off the reefs and 10s period is not helping.  5' on a >14s and I might give it a go.

Monday definitely looks better but still a close call, 3' on 8s fine but if it kicks up to more like 4' on 8s, yuck.  with the wind predicted to come up out of the north, I would definitely launch at first light and probably head NW and fish the reef area towards Baltimore rock, save my normal trip to Simpson reef for another day.  (Depot bay looks better Monday, if my gear wasn't in chaos/storage, that would be my choice.)

cheers, roger

Haha I always forget to analyze the first/second/third swell periodicity. I look at the cool graph on MSW and get too excited. I would make the trip up to Depoe Bay. Anyone going out the next days up there?

I plan to go out Monday.

Being retired, they pay me when I go fishing, therefore I am kind of a professional fisherman.

I too eyeballed Monday (out of PC) but have too many other things going on this weekend. Coupled with the fact I still haven't been on the water in my new kayak I might just try and hit a lake for a little bit Monday instead and see how she handles a flip. Hoping to start going out on the big blue sometime this month at least though!

I really wish the forecast was better regarding the wind. Strong east winds in Depoe suck, even when the swell is small. However, now both MSW and NOAA are calling for the winds to die down by the afternoon, so maybe a mid-day launch is in the cards. I won't know if I'm going until I see what the winds are doing tomorrow morning, so you may see me out there...or maybe not  ::).

jealous of you guys...the better wind forecast would have me headed to Depot on Monday for sure but Pepper and I have 1000 sq.ft. of sheds and decking to demo, I get this project done and we can get back to fishing salmon next summer...until then I request permission to be jealous...lol

Zach and I hit Depoe yesterday. Ocean was great until after 1pm, when the east wind picked up. But we got in some hours on a really nice ocean. Like last weekend, the key to finding lings was to head shallow. I waded through a dozen undersized lings before I came upon 28 and 34 inchers. Zach also took a ling limit and landed some nice cabezon. After I had my lings, I messed around with a small jigging spoon and caught several blacks, a deacon, and a quillback RF. They were generally scattered, no big schools like last week. We also tried for flatfish for a bit, but the wind was kicking up by then, so we didn't put much effort into it.
