Now that I have a manageable length rod (but a one piece), I am looking at getting the Hobie horizontal rod holder.

Anyone have these. I am thinking it would be handy during a "yard sale" entry at PC. A 7' rod in any upright holder seems like breakage all the way

First I've seen of this.  Maybe I'm missing something?  When I go out, I typically have 2 rods with me.  So hanging a rod on either side of the boat is going to have interference issues with the paddle.  If we take the tandem, there's now 4 rods to deal with.  Hanging the rod/reel off the side is just begging for something to damage the rod or the reel and/or cause abrasions to the line.  Next sizable fish and the rod snaps or line gives way...  was there really a benefit???

Is there another strap down point? If you're bouncing hard enough that you need to consider something like this, I would imagine the rod would flex enough for the tip to come out of that little pocket.  Unless you're Hali fishing and using a pool cue, it's going to flex.  What happens if you use a longer or shorter rod than one you used to mount this holder?

Depending on the kayak, rigging up something that places the rod on the top of the boat, not the side, may work okay.  Possibly using a 5'-6' length of PVC built-in vacuum tube (it's strong, thin and light) to slip the rod into and lashing it to the top of the boat with the tip up near the bow and the reel behind your seat so there's nothing for you to hang up on.

You could look at devising a rocket launcher of sorts that pivots to point your rod(s), gaff, net, etc. out over the back of the boat.  I'm assuming these hard landings cause the boats to roll, not cartwheel end to end.  I'd be far more concerned about the +/- $1000 Hobie drive unit vs. the replacement cost of a +/-$100 rod.  If you're cartwheeling a 14+ foot boat...  yeah, I got nothing other than, "please upload the video footage"  :o  The waves around here are quite manageable.  I'f they're not, you're not going out!

I'm sure others with large wave landing experience will chime in.  This product might be exactly what you're looking for and I'm not trying to bash it.
I'm just trying to give you some other possible ideas before you drop $$$ or drill holes.  Whatever you decide, good luck in your efforts.

I have a large okuma Cold Water on it and its totally mismatched, but its the reel I had.   The Coldwater low pro or the Lexa 300 would be pretty ideal and should give you enough capacity for anything I would think.

Thanks for the info. The Cold Water is what I have too. Hmmm...

Haven't fished with it yet, but put my low profile Okuma CW on it and it is a pretty sweet feeling setup. Got me thinking about how to rig it up so that I can switch back and forth between a trolling setup with a slider and a jigging setup. I guess I could just leave the sliding setup and swap between the bumper/flasher/leader and the Lancer with shrimp flies rig?. One shorter, one piece rod sounds appealing.

When I go out (also with a low profile Okuma cold water) I just swap gear when I wanna troll. It's easy enough with a corkscrew swivel tied directly to my braid. Mono bumpers for my lancer/shrimp fly rigs with a barrel swivel. on top and then I attach my diver directly to the corkscrew swivel when I wanna troll around.

I DO sometimes take a second spinning rod with me but it is only for throwing very light jigs or shallow diving crankbaits for those top water bass frenzies.

I just use a Scotty rocket launcher attached to the back track, that folds towards the bow almost flush with the kayak. And a gear tie that wraps around the rail and the rod. Holds it plenty secure during a rough launch or landing (don't ask me how I know) And it doesn't interfere with paddling ;)

I use two rods for  a lot of my fishing, the Trevela ML 7 foot, and the other is Ugly Stick Tiger Lite I think it 7.6.   I have a buddy down in NCKA (Loleta Eric on You Tube). He guides now, but he still uses a paddle kayak, an old Penn Reel, and an Ugly Stick Rod. I dare say, he has caught more salmon on that rig in one year than I will in a life time.  He doesn't use a down rigger, no peddle drive, he just gets out does it old school.  If you wan to learn something about kayak salmon fishing, I highly recommend him.
