Maybe my wife's article will help your friends decision on whether or not a yak is the right choice for them.

I guess what constitutes a "new trend" is all relative.  Well written article, thanks for the link.  You could make many of the same statements about SUP fishing, a somewhat more recent trend.

Thanks for fixing the link, I agree with snopro, well written article, thanks for sharing. Also on the new trend, all is relative, I started kayakfishing more than 20 years ago and native people around here and in other parts of the world were doing it well before there were other alternatives to "kayakfishing". The fist book (at least to me!) on modern kayakfishing was "Kayakfishing: The Revolution" that came out in 2001, it had some interesting information, although there is nothing like learning as you go sharing time in the water with the kind of people you can find in this site, and catching some toothy creatures is an added bonus. As with most things, they get re-discovered and re-invented every so often when someone gets passionate about it or a market develops for it. I am not trying to convince anyone anymore about almost anything nowadays, trying to share one's life and passions (addictions in the case of fishing?) with likeminded people seems to work better at least for me.

You can sit on them if you mount a cooler on it. Once you're used to balancing on it you're gonna be doing your yoga moves on it by sunset. haha

This is the one I have been eyeing down.  I had a chance to see it last month in person and i'm quite impressed with the construction.

I'd suggest re thinking aqua glide.  ;)

For a fishing SUP go with bomber construction and at least a three year warranty.  Hala SUP would be a good example.

There are a few internet articles/posts comparing kayaks & SUP as fishing platforms. I have not tried fishing from a SUP, however I often fish out of a NuCanoe that is 12ft long and 48 inches wide, stable enough to stand on it and cast a fly rod, or safely deploy and recover standard size crab pots in Puget Sound. I love the ability of sight casting to fish and standing up definitely helps both casting flies and spotting fish, I have seen a few but not a lot of people SUP fishing and crabbing in central Puget Sound. It seems that where you would use your fishing platform (lakes, sea, protected area vs exposed area) is important too, sea kayaks seems more efficient if you are moving a lot between areas, particularly if you have some wave action and/or wind. Even if I tether most of my gear somehow I manage to loose stuff every season, it seems you would have to be even more careful with securing gear in a platform with no coamings. Good luck out there!
