I will be getting a new Outback soon, and am thinking about upgrading my fish finder too.
I currently have a Humminbird Piranha, that has got the job done, overall, but is pretty basic and featureless...

What kind do you all have, and what do you like and dislike about it?

Thanks for the info ahead of time!

I have the Garmin Striker Plus 5cv and like it just fine. I haven’t used any other FFs so I can’t compare it to anything else.
One issue, and it could be just me but, I couldn’t figure out how to lower the volume on the beeps. (I still want the beep “on” but I don’t need everyone else around me having to hear it too.)

I have had Hummingbird and Lowrance.  Moved to Garmin Echomap plus line - 93 sv, 73sv, and recently a UHD 73sv.  The 93 is for my Lund and the 73's are for my kayaks.  I made the move mostly because of the Garmin Panoptix Livescope system (separate and expensive) which ties into the Garmin units and can provide a more real time scanning sonar where you can actually see fish swimming.  I was planning on using Livescope for ice fishing and jigging.  The 73 size is a good size for Kayaks.  I tie the 93sv to one of my 73sv units via a ethernet cable so I can run two units on my lund.  I know Cabela's/Bass Pro has the Echomap UHD 73sv on sale right now for $499.

Lowrance Ti2 7" - Badass fish finder, only complaint is that it's a power hog.

Raymarine Dragonfly Pro 7" - Froze up due to what appeared to be some sort of memory corruption. Raymarine warrantied and replaced it no problem. The power and the transducer use the same jack to the head unit WHICH I HATE. Corrosion is a serious problem on the power cables on kayaks, that thing corrodes you have to buy a new transducer instead of a cheap power cable.

They both support Navionics SonarCharts, which is a must if youre going to run maps.

Currently running a Garmin Striker 4. No real complaints; I've treated it like shit and it's still going strong after two seasons.

Looking to get something with side scanning capabilities and navionics to help me better target schools of bait. Seems like there are a lot of options. Spreadsheet time..

I've used both a Striker 4 (on my older kayak) and a Lowrance hook2 5 inch on my new outback.

I much prefer the Hook2 to the Striker, but you get what you pay for., for $100 that I paid the Striker 4 was a decent little unit with a GPS line to follow if it got foggy in a hurry. The Hook is much more detailed with reefs (downscan is incredible) and it's a much easier menu to navigate than the Striker. But it is a power hog compared to the Striker. I get all of 2 trips before the little battery I carry dies, used to get like 4-5 trips with the Striker.

I am also not a fan of the connections on the Hook2. Just a plug with a rubber O ring you stick in, no plastic nuts on the smaller models like the 5 inch I have. You REALLY have to cram the plugs in to get em to sit far enough in to make contact and if the O rings get wet/slick at all they slide right back out after you plug em in (I spray WD40 inside the connections after a day on the salt) so I deal with that issue a lot.

do you have the 3 in 1 transducer for the ti2? If so, how do you have it mounted? It's my understanding that it is too big to retract into an outback hull via the guardian plate. Seems like this could make beaching a real pain, and storage and transport too, possibly? I'm guessing the 3 in 1 can't be mounted inside the hull with putty, as I have done with other transducers, if the sidescan is to work...

What do you use for a power source, since it's such a hog?

I have had the following on my kayaks

Humminbird Helix 5 DI - great first graph... no all the features of todays models but a good durable graph

Humminbird Helix 5 SI G2 - this is my number one recommended graph for new kayakers... it has chirp, DI, SI and autochart live which for kayaking is a hug benefit.

Lowrance HDS live 7- this is my current graph and can literally do everything... but it costs a cool grand.

in my experience the humminbirds are user friendly and definitely more plug and play than the Lowrance that I have.  I generally tell people that if you really want to tweak everything and you have a strong understanding of electronics then garmin or lowrance is the way to go due to the ability to manipulate so many settings. I made the switch to lowrance purely because the ocean claimed my Helix 5 G2 after 3 hard seasons and a bad ocean submersion. My sponsors have a 50% off lowrance situation so I was able to get a graph that otherwise I would have never bought on my own. now days the mid level graphs from humminbird, lowrance and garmin are all pretty comparable... as long as you have a live mappings feature and the si, di, chirp you are pretty much ready for anything from the kayak.

I have Lowrance Hook2-7 splitshot HDI. Bought it in 2019. However, had a lot of trouble with it. Often the screen dims to a level that it is barely visible for no apparent reason. Would not recommend. I believe Lowrance discontinued it.
The only thing i liked was the price (200$). Picked it up cheap on sale in combination with mail-in-rebate

It's mounted on revo with the BerlyPro adapter / cover. Sticks out under the kayak about 2". My kayaks are never beached, but I wouldn't worry about it with the BerlyPro cover, it's made out of some stupid hard ABS plastic. I haven't seen any performance issues shooting though the cover either. Run it with a 9AH SLA.

Thanks again everyone for your input! I was torn for a while between the Garmin Echomap 73sv with 54 transducer, and the Lowrance Elite Ti2 with 3 in 1 transducer, but I just found the Lowrance on Amazon today for only $499. So that ended up being the deciding factor. Can't wait to mount it on my new Outback n try it out! Does anyone have any tips on the setup of this unit?

Thanks for the heads up -- mine gets in this Wednesday. I'll be mounting it on my Revo 13; I forgot to order a BerlyPro transducer mount so I'm going to try to thermoform one from PVC sheeting. Will let you know how it goes!
