I was just getting familiar with the North Coast area fisheries, but now it looks as if I may be moving close to the Upqua.
Has anyone fished for sturgeon/salmon/rockfish in the bay? Sounds like there is probably good crabbing.
Any info or advice on fishing the bay or river would be most appreciated!
A day without fishing probably wouldn't kill me,
but why risk it?

Very familiar with it from a boat, not so much a kayak. I wouldn't want to cross the bar let alone fish anywhere near it with out knowing my stuff and having the perfect weather and tide conditions (even then I don't think I would venture much past half moon bay). Its not something to mess around with but you can crab/salmon fish very close to the east and west basins during the right time of year. Sturgeon fishing in my experience is more of an upriver thing near Gardner. Feel free to PM me with questions.

I've fished for salmon down there from a boat a handful of times. The current can rip, and the water's deep. The salmon fishing was never good enough to convince me to drive down there with my kayak.

The fishery that's always intrigued me in that area are the Smith River stripers. I haven't done it myself, but I know others who've done pretty well fishing the Smith River tidewater in the spring. Some monster stripers live down there.

Thanks guys!

Yeah would love to get some stripers, have only ever caught two in my life.

When I was attending Humboldt State, my transmission went out whilst I was returning from my folks' place in SoCal.
So for a couple days, I was stuck in the truck stop town Santa Nella, in the valley.

I always keep a lil pack rod in my vehicle, so decided to fish the irrigation canal behind the hotel. Found a lil spot with a dam, where anything swimming upstream could go no further. I was throwing a silver Lil Phoebe, first cast in that spot, I got hammered. I had been casting a lot prior, and I guess the sections of my rod had loosened. While fighting the fish (6#test, ulstra light rod), the top four sections of the rod pulled out, basically leaving me with the reel!
Finally managed to get the fish in, a 3# striper, my first. I let it go, and snugged my rod back together well.

Second cast in that spot, got nailed again. I figured there must be a school of em. I looked down and realized I was getting spolled, almost no line left on my tiny reel. I chased the fish up and down the canal for a half hour, without ever seeing it in the murky water. Finally the fish tired and came close. I grabbed it, not believing my eyes. Holding it against my leg, it's mouth even with my beltline, it's tail just touching the ground.
I had no camera, and no one was around to hear my whooping. Guessing 25 lbs?

The ONLY reason I was able to land it was the total lack of structure/debris in the canal, and my ability to follow it everywhere. Probably my craziest catch ever!

Man talk about typos! Never had so many misspellings! Sorry!

Anyway, if anyone does want to come down and fish for anything in the area, once I move in, you're welcome to stay in the spare room I'll have.
