Anthony did good with a limit of BRF & lings. I did okay - got six BRF all about 17" & took home one 24" ling. Aside from breaking a mast rod & bending the other one on my mirage drive, it was a beautiful day on the water.

Any advice on getting the broken end of the mast out of the treads? I already tried penetrating oil & vice grips. Maybe I need to let the oil soak in a bit more.

May have to drill it out or use a tap/easy out.  May be a bit hard with the stainless and galling issues.   If it’s not a 180 drive may be cheaper (if you include your time) to by a new sprocket.

What did you hit to do that damage?

Drifted into the kelp trying to unhook a fish & put it away. Must've bent both of them when I peddled out. One broke about 15 minutes later. It cleared quick & I thought I was okay. Lesson learned: Don't try to power through, pull the drive & clear it. Tried to get the broken end out with vice grips & penetrating oil. That didn't work. I may have to buy a new sprocket. Think I'll call Hobie tomorrow & see if they can help me out.

Wow, that really sucks.  Once stainless steel galls I find it pretty much impossible to remove.  I appreciate you sharing.  Its a good reminder to those of us with Hobies to pay attention to our drives....... :(

At least replacement sprocket for a GT or classic drive can be purchased for $30-ish (plus cost of new mast/fin).  180 drive and up you gotta replace the whole spine for 300-400

Wow, I didn't know about that with the 180 drives. I still have two GT drives, and I typically have to replace a sprocket due to a busted mast at least once a year. Guess I'd better hang onto the GT drives for as long as possible  :o.

yea.  Hobie replaced mine in "warranty" even though I busted it by running into something.  I think they realized they had a bad design (iI would agree...there should be a fuse that doesnt require the whole thing to be replaced) which would explain the kick up fin push.

The broken mast isn't budging. I'm going to buy new sprockets & masts.

I ordered 2 new masts & a new sprocket from Austin Kayak today. I'm hoping they'll get here by the end of next week. Every place else I checked didn't have any GT sprockets.
