Good to hear you'll be in the hood. We'll definitely have to get on the water. Where you wanna go?

Z, Sorry I didn't jump on this. The wife and I both, were sick with a mystery stomach ailment all week. :puke:
Feeling better today, so I might go somewhere close to home tomorow.
Any love from the fish gods for you today?

I've been in super secret communication with Noggin Yakker. :-X I better check with him, before I spill too many frijoles.

We've been tossing around a few ideas, all weather dependent. I don't know about Karl, but I (and Janni) could be in to fishing both Sat. and Sunday. ;D

Fishing both Saturday and Sunday sounds like a good plan to me too. Let's assess the conditions later this week before deciding where we'll fish.

Well the schedule was a bit funky so got a late start but the weather sure waited. Just as still as possible and super glassy conditions. The idea was to head out from Picnic Point to Possession bar and get some blackmouth off the downrigger. The launch was really chill and chatted up some fly fishermen. They noticed my fishfinder and asked if I could scan the area for fish... I did and told them to get into kayak fishing. This months article in Northwest Sportsman mag is on kayak flyfishing. I think we might have 2 new members.  ;D

So finally got off to the races. Possession bar on the horizon..

Possession bar works out to about 2.8 miles so sat back and put the adventure into 5th gear. No real traffic on the water so made it a nice and worry free trip. Can you say glassy?

Bye bye mainland.

After about 30 min I got to the bar and found my starting point.

Got the downrigger set and hooked up a Slayride "Project X" behind the greenGlow flasher. Down she went to about 100' and started the troll. Worked the bar all the way to the end. No action except for a few shakers so set up the troll back in a little deeper water. Made it back to the start with a few more shakers and little action on the FF. I'd been trolling for about 3 hours and had the trip back and the boss at home so decided to make my way out.

Was another clean journey back and the weather couldn't have been nicer. I really wish the tides were working a little more in my favor but the yakfishing was too fun. Gotta love it out there when it's so quiet.

Looking forward to more days on the bar....

Nice water Z, good just to be on the water, eh? Too bad no keeper's.

What's the size limit on the Blackmouth? How much weight do you use on the Downrigger? Doe it vary when there is more or less current?
See ya on the water..

Good questions CBY. The regs split the sound into 13 areas. Right now for the area I fished (area 9) it has a 22" limit on blackmouth and no size limit on coho.

When it comes to downriggers, weight limit really depends on the downrigger you have. The Scotty lake troller that I use has a 4 pound limit and that's what I use. It works great in most situations but when there's a good current flowing the blowback is pretty bad. I end up losing 20-30 feet sometimes which throws me way outta the strike zone. I'll be testing a Scotty depthmaster soon and crank up the weight to about 6-8#'s. I've been using 4#'s for such a long time I think I'll be able to handle the upgrade. When you start using a downrigger it's a good idea to start small and get larger weights as you get used to them. It's a pretty complicated system on a yak that can get messy fast.

Sweet looking water Z.  Looks like a beautiful place.  Some nice (warmer) water would be nice right about now.

This is my usual work out! There is usually a group of shore fisherman trying to hook up with cutthroat trout(great group). To paddle across to Possession you would be wise to work the tides and maybe even a chute for those afternoon westerly winds. Sometimes a fast incoming tide can push you too far South (experience). The channel can have swirly currents too.
I have had the same luck as Zee with nothing big showing until you go too deep. Whoa! the size of those dogfish can really make for a short bit of fun.
Takes about 45min to cross and of course there is heavy barge traffic at times. The worst boat traffic I had was WDFG coming straight at my yak (full speed) to where I felt uncomfortable about them not seeing me and I had to do the paddle wave. They came skidding right up to me, checked my license and hooks and kind of joked about the paddle wave (dorks) then went off on some kind of radio instruction.
This has happened to me three times. Twice at possession and once at Three tree point. Never been a reason to attract them as each time I was checked they were satisfied that I play by the rule book.
Maybe just being unconventional in the yak is enough to make them nervous.

Sure, sitting ducks taste good too.

It is a great place to fish. I have had more luck from Picnic point North to the Shipwreck. (10lb silver). Also been surrounded by dahl porpoise in late September. Another trip it sounded like rain because the herring were just boiling the water there. Seal population is hefty as I swear i saw Michel Jordan pop 4ft out of the water and look straight at me but then decide I wasn't the girl he was looking for.

lucky me!
