Learning how to get around this site, so this is sort of a repeat from my intro on the main page.  Thought this might get replies a bit better.  Been kayaking and canoeing for years.  I crab from my little sit in kayak, which I do not recommend, but I've made the best of it.  It's time to get out on the ocean for some bottom dwellers.  Looking within my price range at a Hobbie Passport 12.  Will it be good for the ocean, such as Depot Bay for example?  Would appreciate some feedback.

Thanks
Doug

Don't know that I've seen a Passport out on big blue but it looks like a solid option. However, the drive looks like it's sealed with a rubber gasket and I don't see scupper holes in the cockpit. I'd be concerned with lack of quick drainage if you ever launch out of PC and take waves over the bow.

I've seen a couple passports out of PC. I even toyed with the idea of getting one as a beater kayak to save my Outback some abuse (sound like an addict, do I really NEED another kayak??)  ??? ???

I think it would drain just fine. Most water will drain through the mirage drive mounting hole and the scuppers under the seat. Outback fills up too if I take a breaker just right anyways. I would just be cautious as it's definitely a cheaper Hobie, and I've heard that the hull isn't as thick on the passports, some people I've talked to decided to save just a little more and go with a Compass. Any kayak will get you out there, just have to have the right preparations and practice.

I note that the Compass is a bit more expensive but the big advantages I see are:  MD180 drive with kick up fins (seriously helpful fishing near reefs or jetties, plus the kick up fins), drop down rudder, and the rear deck has more of a rectangular shape, more space for gear and/or canine back seat companion.  cheers, roger
