You learn how to set up a fly line to fish deep - 40'-50'.  Top water feeding isn't common, and sometimes a shallow bite is from fish charging up to take the fly.  In clear water, you can see them doing it.

I was just talking about using a flyrod for Rock fishing today at work just for a hoot, and then joined this forum and read this stuff , just wondering how to get the fly to sink that far down, but then saw the top water bite "well there is my answer" I am going to like this place.

Depending a lot on your budget, but I would get an 8-10 wt fly rod, a reel with a good drag and a fast sinking line.  It really helps to have a fish finder to know the depth and to locate the schools of rockfish within reach. Then just make sure you have all the safety gear needed for fishing the ocean and you are set.  Start reeling in rockfish.

Being retired, they pay me when I go fishing, therefore I am kind of a professional fisherman.

In my experience, a fast action rod - the Vice is a very fast action rod (in the same class as a Sage One) - doesn't help when casting a heavy/fast sinking line.  When you're casting a S7 line, or adding a heavy sink tip to the line, you need to slow your casting stroke way down.  A fast action rod fights against a slow casting stroke and it can get downright dangerous with a heavy fly on the end of your line.  DAMHIK.

Look at Medium-Fast action instead.

We should take this discussion over into "Waving the Bug Wand" and let Nobaddays bask in the glory of his amazing lingcod.

The more I look at the picture, the more I'm impressed.  Damn big fish, James!
