Ling and Small Halibut Rod - Medium or MH?

Hi all,

I am going to buy a new rod for next season primarily targeted towards lings and small halibut.  It would also be nice to have it swing for larger rockfish as well, since they hang out in the same spots as lings and I'll likely catch a few with this rod. I am considering a rod like the Shimano Trevala 6'6" jigging casting rod, or similar mid price point-range rod that I can find on a deal for Black Friday / Cyber Monday.

My question - Medium or Medium Heavy?  It seems like the medium can handle some pretty big darn fish based on reviews and writeups I've read since the rod is incredibly flexible, so I'm leaning that way versus buying the MH and having it be a bit of overkill for most fish. I'll probably be using 4 to 6 oz on most days and up to 10 for deep water/high current situations.

Thanks in advance for you input on rod power and any other product recommendations you may have.

Check out the Ugly Stik Tiger Elite jigging-casting rods.  I have two 6.5' medium heavy Tiger Elite rods, one rated for 3/4 oz.-4 oz. lures, and the other rated for 4 oz.-7 oz. lures.  They are my favorite jigging rods.  I prefer stiff rods for jigging so I have control over my lure, so I can feel even small bites, and so I can set my hooks instantly.

I jig with the butt of my rod in my armpit.  I have lengthened the butts of my jigging rods to about 18" behind the reel so I can jig with the butt in my armpit and my rod hand comfortably out in front of my chest, rather than tucked in next to my chest.

My favorite all around ocean rod was the Shimano Trevala S. It is the green blank not grey. Super light and strong. Made catching everything fun from greenling and rocks to halibut. The specs are TVSC-63M. 6'3, medium power, fast action, power pro line rating 40-60. Sadly I lost this rod over the side but it was a great rod. Think I paid $170.

I replaced it with a Stryker HLB710. I believe it's their twitching rod blank. Been using it since the Spring and really like fishing with it. Really good action. Not sure how it would hold up to a big (50+lb) halibut but I'm willing to test it

Thanks for the suggestions...There seems to be a wide selection in use throughout the NWKA user group!  I actually got the chance today to try out two rods, the Shimano Trevala S Medium (old school version in green finish, like Jed's - I think the newer equivalent is the PX) and Shimano Trevala casting MH - shout out to Monkeyfist for inviting me over to test them out and shoot the breeze over at his place.

After chatting with Monkeyfist and Clayman and reading all of your posts, I think MH is the answer. Medium seems a little undergunned for fishing deeper reefs (100 ft+) with 8 to 10 oz of lead, which is the higher end of my spectrum that I can't touch with the gear I have presently. Anything lighter (4 to 6 oz) I could cover with my spinning outfit which is why I plan to go with MH.

Now we see what black friday / cyber monday brings, and wait for the next offshore weather window...
