We knew about the log jam, but not the full extent of it.   We figured we should be able to shlep our kayaks over/around just about anything if we had too.  It took us a half an hour of exploring to discover that over and through was the best way to go.   I really wasn't so bad once we set our minds to it.

A couple of additional pics for y'all.

From the upstream side of the log jam.  From this side, it appeared as though the river just ends...

Sweet! Looks like you guys had a great time!
Logistically, how'd your shuttle and those river anchors work out for you?

The river anchors worked great.  Again the low flow probably helped.

As for the shuttle, it wasn't ideal as it took several trips to get the job done, but having three people was nice in that someone could always stay with the gear.

That's the part that keeps me from even trying a river float. I guess I could pay a shuttle service to deliver my car to the take out.

Which part keeps you from trying it? the several trips or having three people?   I'll let you know if I plan on doing this again.  I know Zee wants to give it a try at some point, maybe a trip down the Cowlitz or some other central river might be in order.

Closer to PDX, maybe a Clackamas run.  I'm thinking kayaks are going to be useful for summer steelhead on that river later in the year.

since I tend to fish solo, the logistics are tough without paying for a shuttle

Well then, you're just going to have to get over this social phobia of yours.  Just kidding, I know how hard it can be to rally the troops around here to go fishing.

You have Sundays and Mondays off right?  I'm sure we can figure out another trip if you want to try this. Although, this particular river is going to be flooded with those pesky non-AOTY native brutes soon.

Better a banker than a powerboater.  There isn't anything in the rules stating you can't get help landing your fish.  Maybe there should be, I don't know, but that's a debate for next year.  Besides, I approved it before it happened.

Quote
1. All fish entered must be caught from a kayak, without the aid of a powerboat and using methods deemed legal by the state in which they are caught.

2. Photographic evidence of fish size (total length for most species, for sturgeon use fork length) must be provided. For sturgeon, in the absence of a photo of the fish against a measuring device, a photo of the fish against an object of known size along with measurement that is witnessed and verified by another person in the pool will suffice.

3. Fish caught prior to January 1, 2009 are ineligible. Fish caught prior to payment of entry fees are also ineligible.

4. All fish entered must be caught in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, British Columbia, or Alaska. Fish caught from other states are still interesting but not counted in the prize categories.

5. The pool covers the following ten species/groups: Sturgeon, Rockfish/Cabezon/Greenling, Lingcod, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Panfish (including surf perch and walleye), Chinook, Coho & other salmon, Anadromous Trout, and Land-locked Trout,

6. No out off season, oversize or undersize (fish larger than the legal limit or smaller then the legal limit per species) may be entered. All local water rules must be followed.  Ask yourself, could you have legally retained the fish?  If the answer is yes, then that fish may count towards your points.

7. The biggest fish from each angler for a given species will be used towards the anglers total points.

8. The anglers fish for each individual species will be entered into a per species pool.

9. Panfish are defined as the following common names: crappie, bluegill, sunfish (not Mola mola), yellow perch, surf perch, and walleye.

10. Anadromous trout are defined as sea-run rainbow trout (i.e steelhead) and coastal cutthroat trout.   All other trout are considered land-locked.  Kokanee are actually landlocked sockeye and count towards the coho and other salmon category.

11. Entries must be posted within 2 weeks of being caught and photographed or 11:59 PM on Dec 31st  (which ever comes first). No "hoarding"  of entries.

If you have a mtn bike and are in decent shape you can skip the shuttle.  I have done this many times on the wilson. I can recommend removing your waders first so you don't cook.  Doesn't work well on all rivers but for ones like the wilson or trask it is doable (depending on the drift you do).
