It started out" iffish" for weather but no wind -so loaded up yak up and (need to say it's 9 am already) head out for some more salmon adventure in Coo Bay. Went out the North spit boat ramp and the zoo correction, the circus with all the monkeys running loose (story for another day) was a no go any way you looked at it- one of those sitting in a lawn chair drinking beer and watching with a look of "AWE" and is that even possible day. Site 2 the Charleston marina which is known as a zoo but this day she was all calm -go figure-. Headed out of the marina making small talk with a couple of boats going in. I think in their behalf it was seeing a kayak with a fly rod and thinking WTF- IDIOT. The plan was to and fish the section under the Coast Guard tower (Chicken Point) lots of kelp for the salmon to hide in and ambush prey simple straight forward fishing and not a lot of boats around. Sad to say this didn't happen started marking fish not big fish but fish and lots of fish, what the hell why go chasing salmon when they are coming to me. Could it be, will it be, is a legend going to be born on this day probably not but was wishful thinking. 1st cast was just off the sunken jetty- counted down to 20 and started stripping back fly like it was a drunken sailor, and the fly just stopped line tighten up and nothing but solidness. Oh, this is great -fishing gods are already punishing me for my earlier thoughts when reality took hold, with the rod dancing in my hand not any kind of dance but the dance of the mighty pacific salmon or one surly hope for. 1st salmon of the day and a beautiful fat jack. As one boat went by, they all gave a big shout out and got a big ear to ear grin from me in return. Fast forward 30 minutes later- it's not that there was no fish being caught, well no salmon at least but a couple of blacks (nice size on their behalf) and one need to remember this is a salmon report. So, for about the next couple of hours fishing over and around the sunken jetty salmon was being caught not the big show off kind that one's see on Facebook kind but the ones where you get to keep 5 "jack salmon". A couple of boats came by and fished with me for a while and gave up either in disappointment or in the fact that the fish where just jacks, but for me it was heaven on earth pretty much fish after fish losing many to their airborne launching or coming back at me at Mach one speed. Tide had gone to high slack, and the bite was over the and damage had been done. A limit of jacks plus for those that are wandering about the rockfish (some of the blacks came in at 4 1/2 too little over 5lbs.) a limit of them to. Fish fry tonight and smoked salmon here in a couple of days!!!
