There's a 'consignment' shop on SE 82nd and Woodstock here in Portland that I drive past occasionally that claims to have fishing tackle.  I just haven't actually checked it out yet.  With this economy I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few good deals out there.

Brian,
I'll check that out after work tomorrow.

After doing a quick bit of research, it turns out there are pawn shops around here. They are just much more tightly regulated than in California. That's probably why they aren't all around and obvious.

I actually think the shop I'm mentioning is a pawn shop.  Guess I better hurry over there tonight if I want any of the good deals (if any).

There is a store called Beaverton Pawn in (you guessed it) Beaverton.

Try Ollie Damon's. It keeps used stock.

That struck me as funny, as baitcasters have been around a lot longer than spinning reels. I can remember fishing as a kid with my grandfather (in the '60s), who considered spinning reels to be new-fangled contraptions. I had a bunch of his hand-me-down baitcasters long before I had a spinning reel. Thumb control was everything, as those old reels didn't have the fancy magnets and everything else that's used now to prevent bird's nests.Spinning reels didn't become common until post WWII.

No Kidding. My dad never got ma anything other than spinning reels growing up so I guess I never questioned it. I may have to try out a baitcaster for bassin'.

When I was young we had a few of the old baitcasting reels, and I never got the hang of it.  It was spinning reels for me most of my life until recently.  I picked one up just before the outing to Silver Lake last fall.  Part of the reason I spent all day out instead of meeting up for the bbq was that I was undoing birds nests and enjoying the view!  I've since got a better feel for adjusting it, and will be using it more, but I'll always have a spinning reel on hand just in case.

like the kid who was taught by his dad to be a metal chucker said to the old school feather caster when he tried it for the first time; "oh, i get it, you have to practice"

i grew up with a fly rod in my hand and got adept at using it for just about anything and everything..[ " beware the man who has only one gun" comes to mind], so it took me a while to catch on to using a bait caster or a spining reel. any new skill has a learning curve.

now, i have multiples of each, but as some of you have noted when we fished together, i seem to prefer the bait caster over the spinner. just it's an old fashioned streak in me.

back to the origins of this thread;

low profile? Okuma alumina series.. left handed please. $80 retail, i caught a "sale" at the puyallup Joe's one spring and got one for $20 off.

standard baitcaster? abu garcia..

i like the ease of use and maintenance on both models.. and the fact that i can pick backlashes loose easier on them too.

If you are considering spinning reels you might want to consider something for both fresh and saltwater use.  I've got a couple of Shimano Spheros 4000FA.  I picked them up from TackleDirect for $70.  One a couple of years ago, and one a couple of months ago.  Looks like they are still $69.99 now.  They also throw in a 300yd spool of 10# mono.
