I was out fishing this week at Eel Lake and my pedal drive (Mirage Drive 180) started slipping and eventually just completely gave out (an hour or so into fishing on day 1  :( ) . I looked at the spine and there were no plastic teeth left on the gears. Seems like a terrible design having the metal chain just wear away at the plastic teeth.

In my brief research on my phone, I’ve hit nothing but dead ends (West Coast Sailing, Hobie’s Website, random Google search sites), seems like no places have parts or new whole pedal drives in stock. Does anybody know where to order spare parts or a new drive? I’m trying to get back up and running before our annual Merwin trip in August,

Fishing report from Eel Lake was great, got into a bunch of coho (released), trout, and a couple bass before I had to paddle back to the launch.

Somewhere on this site, there is a thread about after market metal replacement parts, that people sounded pretty happy with. Looks like you can get em on Amazon.

A day without fishing probably wouldn't kill me,
but why risk it?

I know a couple guys that added a stainless screw where the bottom tooth would go. They fish a lot and have never had a problem since doing that. They are not on here but I'll try to get a pic.

I had a similar problem with broken teeth and worn bearings. I did the Goss Outdoors lower spine replacement.

It was quite an involved procedure but worked out great for me. I highly recommend the bearing upgrade.

Cheers

I wonder if Bass Pro realized what they were getting into when they bought Hobie?

I just watched both of his videos disassembly and replacement. I’m not sure I have the patience, or handyman skills to do this but for $260 it seems like a decent route to go.

The single screw through the bottom seems like the ‘easiest’ method but I’d be worried about the reliability and longevity of the fix.

Just asked one guy how long he has been using the drive with the screw and he says about 5 or 6 years. He fishes rivers and up at neah and has full confidence in the fix. Might be worth it till you can figure out something else.

This is what the other guys sent me about the fix. He has been using it for about a year and a half.

I made sure the peddle shaft were strait and counted the number of links on each side to make sure it is center.   The center teeth of the sprocket was missing on mine.  I drill a small hole in the center and used a 3/4 inch stainless steel screw.  I added some adhesive to the screw before I screwed it in.  To be extra sure it stayed in.

Looks like they had some of the grips left on their sprockets. Mine had been completely stripped and the whole assembly was sagging so that was my main concern.

I ended up finding a certified dealer with the part in stock (Outdoor Emporium in Seattle) and shipped it up there for repair. Now I need to fix my Garmin that says it’s short circuiting…never a dull moment with the kayak.
