So I called today to make reservations.  The sites on the other side of the creek were all booked except 1.  So I booked the 6 sites in the center of the lower campground.  These are right in the middle of things with the cabins on 1 side and some hookup sites on the other.  I think all 6 are spoken for right now by myself, Fishin-T, Pisco Sicko, floatin cowboys, chaliefl66, and pjrflyguy.  Guys, correct me if I'm wrong here.  If you need a site, you may want to speak to 1 of these guys about sharing a spot, or else call Snow Creek directly at 1-800-883-1464 and book a site for yourself.

TO ALL,

I've gone ahead and made a reservation for one of the sites across the creek from the 6-site main area.  That leaves one of those 6 slots open and so you'll need to speak up and let Allen know that you want it.

It seems that my snoring would be considered an unfair harrassment of the other contestants.    ::) :D   I sure don't want to be disqualified for foisting a bad case of sleep deprivation on my fellow anglers and this is why I've taken the neccessary steps noted above.   ;)

Rules and signup are up on the main page.  Or go here ...http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index2.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5&Itemid=8&pop=1&page=0

Please sign up as early as you can so we can get a good estimate on the turnout as soon as possible.  More participants may lead to more and better prizes.

Version 1 of a promo flyer.  Still working to finalize details with other sponsors.  They'll be added as things settle.  But feel free to print this out and post at any fishing shops, kayak shops, etc. that are willing to carry this.

Excellent RiverBase!  See you there.  Are you all coming from the Curlew area?  If you have 4 kayak anglers up there, that's one of the densest population of kayak anglers I know of in the NW.   :o

Another update ... I met the with Missy, the Special Events Manager for West Marine.  Thanks to Charles for the intro.  They're committed to sponsoring the derby.  We're working together to come up with a good prize package.  You won't be disappointed.

Needless to say, please make an effort when at all possible to support our derby sponsors.  They're going  out of their way to help support us and it's only natural that we try to do the same.

Riverbase, I'll hold aside a camping spot for you and your group.  There is still one more spot available as well if anyone wants to shout out for it.

You can texas rig for the bass just fine!!!  And you'd even have a blast with them on your bass outfits so be sure to bring them.

What great news, from both Riverbase and Polepole.  :D

Jim, I look forward to meeting you and your crew. I tried for walleye on Banks this past weekend, and was skunked.  :'(  Being a walleye virgin, I don't know what I did wrong, and I hope I can get some tips.

Allen, have you considered approaching G.I. Joe's?  They're a big regional chain, and  I know they sponsor some events. They do need a little help picking out their yaks if they want to appeal to serious kayak anglers.  :-\  (They tend to stock things like Wilderness System's "recreational" yaks; i.e. T120s and smaller)

I guess thats why they call this sport fishing instead of catching ...sometimes your doing everything perfect and someone forgets to tell the fish but that is what makes the sport interesting..but getting skunked is still a blow to your ego...that never happened to me ::).....anyway we may pick up one more person who just picked up his new kayak, he lives in Seattle but hasn't gave a thumbs up yet....be dreaming of Ling for the next month...Jim L

Guys/Gals

If you send me a derby entry, can you please drop me a PM or email telling me so.  I'm heading down to CA for almost 3 weeks and won't be able to check the mailbox.  I would like to track how many entries we are having as it may influence sponsor involvement.

Here is the current chart for derby day.  Nice slack in the morning with the current coming up at the time we get off the water.  Still, not that big a current even at it's max.

Allen, is it better to fish at low tide or high tide?  And where did you get the tide link chart?

Thanks!

V.P.,

It all depends on the target species.  By the way, that chart is not showing the tide level, but instead it's showing the current speed.  The two are related but not in sync.  Like the tide might reach full high tide and then 4 hours later the current might be at top speed.

For Snow Creek, the green area indicates an ebb current, that is it's going out to sea, or towards the west.  At about noon on Sunday, it'll be about 1.2 knots towards the west, and that's not very hard to paddle against.  But this doesn't take "back eddies" into account.  When Polepole and myself were fishing for halibuts over by Sekiu (on the straight) we thought for sure that the current would take us quickly toward the west that morning, but instead we drifted nearly as fast towards the east.  Apparently we caught a wide back eddy.

I like to check this site for TIDES, which don't matter too much to me unless I've camped too close to the surf  :o :
http://www.saltwatertides.com/dynamic.dir/washingtonsites.html

And this is the site for CURRENTS, which mean a LOT to me because you can use them to drift for halibuts or you might want to sit still during the slack tide (when the current has just stoped one way but hasn't started going the other way) and mooch for ling cod:
http://www.dairiki.org/tides/

Both of these links can also be found over on the "Getting Started" forum.  If I'm reading you right, you're wanting to get some idea when do the fish bite best, right?  In my limited experience, I've done best on lings and sea bass during the slack currents.  Okay, for that answer... you're right.  For that answer, you should consult with Allen.
