The best kayak fishing tournament in NorCal each year is without a doubt the rockfish/lingcod tournament organized by the Great White Kayak Company.  For the past 4 years this tournament has been held in Elk, CA (Mendocino County) and it has been limited to 50 anglers.  Those 50 spots usually get filled up in the 30 minutes that registration is open.   Zee and I managed to get two of those 50 spots last year and had a blast.

This year however, the venue has been changed to Albion, CA (15 mins to the north of Elk) and the registration limit has been lifted.

If anyone else is interested in representing NWKA down in CA while doing some of the best rockfish/lingcod fishing in the lower 48 let me know.

From reading the thread on the NCKA site, it looks like camping sites are getting booked now so don't delay on this.  It would be great to have a decent bunch of NWKA guys down there this year.

Albion is about 13 hrs from Seattle, 10 hrs from Portland, 7 hrs from Coos Bay, and only 5 hrs from Brookings.  Given that I just drove back to Portland from Fresno, CA today this doesn't seem so bad.  Besides we can/should car pool as much as possible.

Most likely an impossibility for me this year but I can't recommend this tourney enough. The people, food, and the fishing are nuts!! Beautiful scenery and a great drive too. I'm REALLY gonna miss it this year...  :'(

Yeah Zee, I realized if would probably not be an option for you this year.  I guess I'm hoping to drum up some interest to get someone else to car pool with me down this year.

I wish. :'(

I was a couple hours from leaving for Elk 1 when one of our cars started acting up. My wife read me the riot act, about leaving her at home with a sick car. ::)

Sean White of GWKC runs the show and he's an OK Pro Staffer.  I'm guessing the prize will be a OK Trident.  However, I think he's also sponsored by Kokatat so a dry suit might be an option as well.

The real prize is participating in "Kayakstock" (good food and good company with like minded kayak fishing enthusiasts).

I could be interested  in tagging along if a group was going..  Would need to carpool/etc to make it feasible money wise.  From p-town would this be a 3-4 day trip?

I think last year Zee and I made it a 5 day trip, but we did things like spend a couple extra days fishing before and after the tournament.  We even made a side trip to visit Roy (Coosbayyakker).

I think my plan would be to drive down Thursday, pre-fish Friday, even on Saturday and return Sunday.   I could also do a three day (Fri-Sun), but I generally have a rule that I like to spend less time driving then I spend at my destination.

4 hours from San Jose!!! Brian, are you reserving NWKA Central?  I can't completely commit at this time as I may be in Alaska.   ;)

If there is enough interest from NWKA I'll reserve a spot.  According to Sean White, a spot will hold 3 tents.  $25/night for the one tent, $35/night for two tents, $45/night for three tents.

If there isn't any NWKA interest I'll be camping out with my old fishing buddies (a.k.a the Bodega Crew).
