Small Boat club

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK guys this is a Washington State thing........................

I am trying to gauge the interest for a small boat fishing club.(also to include float tubes and yaks) The parameters will be listed below. The goal of this club will be to have tournaments that the beginner or "low budget" kinda guy can fish in and be competitive!!!

The tournaments would be on small to medium sized lakes. Some examples would be Shoecraft, Flowing, Sawyer, Meridian, Goodwin, Big lakes. Probably the club would have to be affiliated with either BASS or FLW for the insurance issues. I have been told that a club can get the insurance outside of that cheaper but still researching!!!!(again is there any interest) I think there will have to be a membership fee(small $20-$50) to cover some of the expense and with that said a small fee for each tournament. Monthly meetings and a certain amount of participation(50% of tournaments) I don't want this to be a "money" tournament thing(low budget, beginners) but maybe plaques for the top 3 finishers. Big fish pot(rules will vary for float tubers) The real goal is to be able to fish with a group of guys, have fun, share an interest in catching bass. In a perfect world everyone would share all their secrets but..............hopefully at least everyone would contribute to others in the club.

Understand that all of this is just an idea in the planning stages. Your ideas and participation will really be what determines the finial product. Because nothing has really been made official my thoughts where to start to with some "fish In's". Pick a lake and a date and fish as a group, since we won't have a permit. If we can get a core of at least 6 or 8 guys I think we could really get this thing off the ground. I would like to pick a date in early May if I can just get even a small response.

OK here is basic idea of "small boat" requirements"

#1 Boat is 16' or less with an engine of no more then 30hp.(remember smaller lakes.........well maybe 1 a year on big water???)

#2 Float tubes and such would also be welcome. ( have an idea for weighing and releasing that I believe would work........lets hear your ideas)

#3 Tournaments would be from first light until 1 hr before sundown.(never could understand quitting at 2pm)

#4 Figure 2 tournaments a month May- October. (maybe 2 that are "overnight" 2 day'ers)

#5 Look this is not the darn Classic the goal is to have fun, improve technique, and maybe get some guys who are little ................. cranky  about what else is offered.

I have posted this on a No# of fish boards a fellow over on ifish told me about here..........I thought perfect fit!!!! If you have an interest please give me a call at 425-281-8438

I understand that part...................it is not going to be a perfect fit for everyone...............just trying to make it possible for many. The goal is to get some guys together and have fun.

I think 9.9hp is actually the Wa state cutoff for a small boat.  I don't know a single guy (or gal) that uses a float tube, pontoon, or kayak/canoe that isn't going to tell you that a 16' jon boat, fish'n barge, or small ski boat w/ a 30hp motor is even remotely in the same class as a human or even electric only (trolling motor) powered vessel.

I've seen this idea float around on WaLakes.com from time to time, but even amongst those guys it was limited to pontoons (the inflatable kind), float tubes, kayaks/canoes, and tiny dinghies w/o gas motors.

As a kayaker I would feel like Lance Armstrong at the Daytona 500.

I'd be much more apt to participate if fuel powered engines were out.  I can keep up with an electric trolling motor, but there's no way I could hit the same water from the same launch as a guy with a 30hp motor.  No matter how you try, having access to larger areas of water in significantly less travel time is an advantage. I would be unwilling to put money down to compete against that scenario.  I can't remember where I saw it, but a while ago (could be a couple years ago) I saw a site based out of California that was all man-powered bass anglers.  I believe they ran tournaments, too.

Troy,
What I noticed are the bone dry oars inside the boat... And, that 2 pounder looks huge when you hold it out like that! >:D

Brian,
I hope this defense of human power doesn't earn me another week wearing the @sshat.  ::)

Troy2,
Make it human power only, and I'll love the idea!  ;D

Your idea is better! Just dump the power boats and you're on to something. Or, for tourneys, maybe have two classifications; human (or sail) power, and motor power.

That is an idea that has merit .......................If there are willing people .........Why not.I like the motorized/non motorized idea ........I think there has got to be away to make it all work.
