How many miles offshore have you paddled and went fishing?   :o

Offshore - about 4 out and 4 miles back chasing salmon.
Alongshore - about 12 miles (6 down and back) chasing lingcod.

Never been in the salt. How long does it take to paddle 4 or 6 miles?

Same area as Bsteves..  Farthest straight line west from launch site (gps) for me has been around 4 miles off Oceanside Oregon, bottom fishing/moocing for salmon. Have some great cords I used to fish with the PB and paddled out to check them out, they were still good, have to hit them before the 40 fathom closure though. Not really worth the extra effort and the deeper reefs have problems with to many "orange fish".  Most spots I fish are 1/4-2 miles off the beach.  Some of the best bottomfish spots I have are close to shore, no PB can get in due to the swells/rocks etc and they never get fished.  Spots farther out get hit by PB's, pukers, and commies and have poorer fishing for more work. Salmon is another story altogether :-X

so far...I have not needed to go any farther than I could swim safely to shore.
There are many rocks and places to paddle to farther away, but I don't need to. Yet!

Most kayak anglers probably average aroudn 3.5 mph give or take 1/2 mph, depending on kayak and fitness.  Some go a little faster, but maintain 5 mph on a SOT kayak would be a lot of work for a paddler, perhaps a pedaler might have an easier go at this speed.

My trip 4 miles out and back took most of a morning and a few hours of the afternoon.  I was trolling, mooching, etc.. the whole way so it wasn't a continuous paddle.   I think when we where all the way out we figured it would take a couple hours to get back and planned accordingly.
