I have this crazy idea that may or may not work could be something that you all could get behind. The Columbia and Willamette are closed for many days of the week for the spring chinook season.

What do you all think of the idea of establishing a day in the week for sport anglers that was set aside exclusively for angling from a craft that was "human powered only". No bank fishing, no power boats, only kayaks, and canoes. I am thinking Sunday in the current configuration.

It would allow kayak anglers to get after the fish where otherwise it might be hazardous due to heavy traffic, it could potentially increase kayak angler numbers, and contribute to the health of a segment of the population that quite honestly could use the exercise.

Sounds like a great idea to me. I think you'd get a lot of push back from those complaining about establishing an 'elite' special interest group that has all the fish to themselves ---kind of like the gillnetters.

If you look at the majority of PB owners, as representatives of society in general, they couldn't care less about getting any exercise. Fat and lazy, conspicuous consumption is the name of the game.

I'll back the proposal 100%.

OK, this is gonna sound boastfull but my success ratio has been much higher than the average PB'er out there.  If yakers are aware of their surroundings and courteous they have no problem mixing it up with guys who have motors.  Heck, they can come in real handy, just ask Yarjammer.  ;)

That said, I don't see where there's any basis for exclusivity.  Yeah, it'd be nice but it's not like we're handicapped....

I just jump in line with all the PB'ers when trolling for fall chinook, just gotta be aware of what's going on around you.. Most guys give you room, every once in a  while you get someone that thinks they own the water that gets kinda close, no biggie.

I actually like getting in with the PB'ers. There lame comments make me chuckle, especially when i think about the 100's of dollars they spent to catch 30 bucks worth of seafood... The exhaust smell gets bad sometimes..
See ya on the water..

I don't think like the idea.  Personally, I'm just another fisherman that happens to paddle a kayak.  It can work both for and against you.  I don't subscribe to anything that in general, has the potential to alienate the sportfishing community.  My 2 cents ...

I think your intentions are right on, but...IMHO
You would have to allow bankies on the same day. Otherwise, it would be seen as a selfish special interest effort. On that note it might best be presented as a non-motorized angling day.

I could see it now.  A guy determined to beat the system would buzz out there in his 250 HP boat, and then troll amongst the kayaks and canoes using oars!   ;D

Wow.. I didn't know we were such an elite group of super athletes with a divine right to fish because we choose to paddle instead of turn a key?  I thought the outdoors were a shared resource where we all get a chance to experience it when, where, and how we each see fit. Why is this always brought down to a middle school "us versus them" argument, we're good, their bad.. we rule, they suck...  apparently we're in great shape and they're all fat  ::)  Instead of closing doors and stereotyping, I would hope we would be getting in there and getting it done out on the water, showing what is possible in a yak (like Spot), right in there next to our fellow sportsmen in powerboats, and working to educate and celebrate our commonalities instead of our differences.
