BSteves, what's your guess on the ages of those oranges?

Just as long as the North coast beats the South coast, that's all that matters!   8)
was there ever any doubt? >:D They may have small surf, but we've got the big fish! ;D

I knew someone would set us straight on the Red fish.. I thought it was a yellow eye right off the bat and then started to second guess myself, it was much redder (especially the fins) than other yellow eyes I have seen, but the stripe down the side never lies I guess.

ok, cool.
Yeah, actually released both of them just because I wasn't sure. The vermilion almost didn't make it - couldn't get the dang thing to go down and stay down. PP had some handy work with some extra weights though and we finally got him down. He sure was fat though. Wish I would've known the difference.

Yaknitup..  Wish I had had my head screwed on straight and had the proper ID on the Vermill, shame to send a nice fish like that back if you didn't have to.  Thats what I thought it was but wasn't positve ::), didn't want to make a $$ mistake :-[.   Guess I need to make a cheat sheet too.

I'm not sure what size that fish is?  Yelloweyes mature (i.e. first spawn) when they reach about 16 inches and about 6 years old.   They get as large as about 35 inches long and 114 years old.

Yaknitup,  you did the right thing releasing both of those fish.  If you aren't sure what it is, you shouldn't keep it.

Wonder if you could take a sturgeon leader (barbless hook) and tie a good sized weight to it.  Tie a hand line to the bend of the hook so it's basically upside down.  Then hook the fishes lower lip and lower it down and let it either spit the hook, or you pull up quick and unlodge the hook freeing it.

That's the basic idea behind the SFD (Sheldon Fish Descender)
http://www.sheltonproducts.com/SFD.html

In my opinion it does a great job getting the fish back down and out of sight.  I'm not sure how many of the descended fish actually end up surviving the barotrauma (bulging eyes, gut sticking out of their mouth, think the "bends" for fish).

That is exactly what you can do.  In my ocean PB days I had a rig like this using a pop can poured full of lead as a weight on a short pole much like CBY's downrigger.   Hook them though the bottom lip, express them down to depth and jerk up hard.

This video from the ODFW shows the fish seams to just come back to life once it gets back to the right pressure.

Thanks for a great day fishing guys.  Good to see all of you and get some time in on the water.  Beautiful day, and the fish cooperated too.  The kind of day that could spoil you.  We gotta do that again.

Nice haul!!!

Agree with bsteves on the ID's of both reds.

As for fish descenders/releasers ... I've been know to use an 8 ounce jig head, barb removed, tied to the hook bend upside down (lead down and hook pointed down away from the line) ... hook to bottom lip, drop down to bottom, give a jerk and it pulls loose.
