I'd love to get out on the ocean but I have to drive from Hood River. Maybe I can make it next time and hook up with you guys. I'd really like to get some video of ocean fishing.
Fishing out here in the boonies is nice, but I miss the ocean.

Also, those are some of the smallest waves I have ever seen.

This one is a vermillion and I hope you kept it.  :)

Pole showed me a good check to verify Vermillions.  Rub your finger along it's chin/jawline.  If it feels like sandpaper, it's a Vermillion.

BTW: Nice job slammin the fishies!!!!  I'm jealous as hell!  Way to get the job done!

If only you knew how many times I forget if the rough chin is a verm or if the smooth chin is a verm.

3 years ago at our first derby in Neah Bay, one guy (the eventual winner with a ling) caught a nice one and I couldn't for the life of me remember which was which.  I just knew it was a verm, but had never seen one caught in WA, so thought twice about it.  I ended up telling him I just didn't know, so he released it.   :'(  Good eats there!!!

Nanook - how'd that hand line debut go for ya?  I'm curious about that new toy of yours.......

This story gets even better.  The same guy wasn't too sure about fish ID either and had asked me earlier if I had any advise on what to keep and what not to keep.  I told him that if it was orange or reddish, to let it go.  We catch canaries in the area and didn't want him keeping one.  Of course he got that verm, but earlier he had also caught a tiger rockfish.  Yup, reddish stripes, so he let it go too.  This was one of those "humbling" experiences.  He was somewhat of a rookie to the area, came from the east side, was fishing small red/white walleye jig tipped with market shrimp (how many of you use shrimp for bait).  Let's just say that class was in session that weekend.

Yeah, I'm going to have to bring some squid out with me next time. That's a great idea.

I always try to have squid with me..  I buy it cheap at asian markets, then vac pac it in "trip sized portions" about 6-7 squid.  I find a 1/3 to a 1/2 of a large (8-10 inchers) squid works well depending on jig size (mostly 3-5oz for big lings.  My very favorite is Octopus, tough stuff, stays on like glue.

Hey Pe-Paddler,

I'm starting to get a little concerned about your average points per fish....
Knock it off, would'ja?

Nice catch PC fishers....good sized & nice variety.  Might just bring some squid out with me next time.

I took my nephew out for his first time ocean yak fishing at Otter rock and he had a great dose of beginners luck.  5 doubles, all blacks.  Black fishing so good, we kept nothing under 3#s. We took home 2 limits of hefty blacks in about 90 minutes.  Also, pitched back an 18" ling, a greenling & many blacks.  Then we topped it off with brew & burgers at the Rogue brewery in newport before heading to Eugene.   A great day, lots of fun and added one more person hooked on yak fishing.

eddeeleo - I was wondering how you did.  Good job catching the fish and another kayak fisher.  Catching fish always makes for a better day.  Been wanting to fish Devils Punchbowl, Beverly Beach, Seal Rock and Otter Rock.  All look like sweet places to fish, just not enough time off.  Glad to hear you had a good day.

Where did you launch?

I launch at Devils punchbowl.  There's stairs leading to the beach.  Easy sliding your yak down the wood stairs, but it's a workout going back up.  This is a proposed marine reserve, nominated by PB's as a compromise.  If you want to check it out,  better not wait too long.

Yeah, I've checked out that spot, had the sore legs to prove it! I was just curious to see if there was another access to that beach that didn't involve those stairs. Those things are killer!
