Well after noggin yakker basically told me to quit whining and buy one alrdy....I ordered a fishfinder...
I ordered a Humminbird 767 Combo which is basically a 580 with 4000 watts ptp and 500 watts rms...everything else is pretty much the same....hopefully its a good deal...they were recently discontinued by humminbird so if you can find somebody who has them in stock you can get them way cheaper than the 580....i got mine for 290 plus shipping...I couldn't really pass that up....A very nice fishfinder with a gps in it for that price is hard to come by....I can't wait for it to come in so i can install it

Anyways i kinda wanted to get the ducer in the water instead of the shoot thru hull design....so has anybody ever made a bracket to go off of the rudder...i remembering seeing a picture of one but i don't remember where

does  anybody see any problem with this method besides the fact that it could get broken off pretty easy?

i figure if it gets broken off then my rudder is probably gone too...only problem is when i stow the rudder it will be sticking up

can anybody think of a better way to get it in the water?

I don't remember what kind of kayak you have.

I just contacted Humminbird this week and got the following information on scupper transducers.  I have not yet purchased a FF/GPS.

"From: "cservice" <cservice@johnsonoutdoors.com>

Thank you for contacting Humminbird for your fish finding needs. We greatly appreciate you purchasing one of our units and will strive to assist in any questions you have on our products.

The plastic thru hull transducer made for the scupper hole of the Ocean Kayak is the XTH 9 20 P and if you purchase the unit with a transom transducer you may exchange it by sending the uninstalled/unassembled transducer to the address below for an even swap.

yessnoo, the only thing I can think of regarding the possibility of breaking the 'ducer is make sure that this discontinued unit has compatibility with current production 'ducers.  If not, you'll have to start all over.
Oh, and 'ducers aren't cheap.

Why don't you want to shoot through the hull?  Is it regarding water temperature?

If you're serious about putting your 'ducer in the water, I'd suggest you do something like CBY or Noggin Yakker did with theirs.

First... FINALLY!!! ;D It's not a bad ff. So why not the through hull? Works just fine. I don't see too many plusses from making it on the outside other than temp. which I only use it for bass. IMO the through hull is cleaner w/ no wires sticking out to catch on stuff etc.. Pretty much just personal preference.

I'm not happy with my shoot-thru,,, mounted behind mast tube in Revo... It returns bottom and fish arches ok ,, but my beef is that the colour,,  (m68c}and the return looks like i'm in silty water,, colour wash out.. The hull is thick there, thinking of moving it to a thinner spot. Anybody done this to compare? It was in scupper hole on the Trident, thats what i'm comparing it to...
 Thanks for any input    Royg

ya im still debating i suppose....but it just seems to me that you spend all this money on a good fishfinder and then you degrade the returns by go through the hull....that plus the temp thing but i don't know how big a deal that really is

Sounds like a setting problem. Check your manual and I'm sure you can get it figured out. Thousands of kayak fishermen can't be wrong..  ;)

BTW FF's shoot through much more than just plastic on PB's.

Will do more on that Zee,, now that it isn't 20 ft away like the Trident,, just wondering about the  stiffness near mast tube relative  to thinner  spots,, at such high  frequency i wouldn't think would matter.. Would like to keep the trans looking at where my  jig is ..

Ya I mean its not wrong to put the ducer inside...and I don't truely know how much it degrades or if it even degrades the return but I can imagine it has to effect however minute it may be...but that being said I can't think  of a very practical way to put it outside the hull...on the rudder your going to have an issue everytime you go over a wave because the back of the boat comes pretty far off the water....and the only other option is something like noggin yakker has...but i don't know if i want something sticking off the side of my boat because i like fishing right up against things sometimes ie. pilings where i am banging the side of my boat against it with the waves...don't wanna have to worry about breaking something

so i guess i just talked myself into putting it inside lol....now do i goop or make the cup for water hmmmm
too many choices lol

speaking of pilings is it illegal to fish by the ferry docks when they leave...i tried dropping a jig yesterday because there was only one ferry running the vashon route so it took them like an hour to get back and the first the drops got slammed before they even hit the bottom...only got one to the top and it was the smaller of the hits...small rockfish

I like to put my trans right in front of the mast tube. I don't think the thickness of plastic has anything to do with the return. Keeping your jig on the radar is kind of tough. If you have a day where the current/wind is low you can get it right below you but most days there's one or the other and it's swept out of range.

Yessnoo, if you had an over the side kind of 'ducer setup, you could pull your MD unit and drop the 'ducer down the open hole when you are sitting against the pilings.

My temp still works mounted as a thru hull. Takes a few minutes to get acclimated but it returns a temp that is in the ball park of what it should be.  Not that it really matters for most of the fishing I do..

In the summer mine starts returning rediculous temps between 90-112*.  I would love to have mine in the water during the early spring and late fall so that I can figure out when the water is in the right range for certain techniques.  I am looking at a Hummingbird in lieu of my Eagle for my next 'finder for this reason.
