That discussion related to filling in grooves on the hull with P-tex, not waxing the plastic. I don't think waxes designed for skis would be an effective way to reduce friction. Besides, there is an incredible surface area you'd need to cover and all the dragging would nessitate reapplying the wax after every paddle.

Greets TigerTheory!

I'm often in your neck of the woods as both my folks and my brother live just outside of Oak Harbor.  I'll make sure I bring my 'yak and the old tandem we have sittin' around next time I head that way.  There is a lot of sheltered fresh water to get out and paddle on in that area, no problem in that department.  I'll get in touch with you via private message (PM) when I may be headed your way.

Welcome TigerTheory,

I live in Oak Harbor and have been itching to get my yak out on the salt again.  I generally go on weekdays since I'm retired.  Plan on putting my kayak rack back on the truck and heading out again as soon as weather warms up a bit. It was sure great this weekend, but I didn't want to fight the crowds.

I have a Prowler 15 and Scrambler XT, and have used both of them out around Deception Pass and off Ft. Casey.  If you are interested in giving it a try, maybe we can work out a short shakedown trip. We live in a great place for it.

Right on,  Im down to go out and let you guys give some pointers.  Maybe the three of us could hook up and find some good spots to fish from.  I will be getting some time off in early July so maybe we could do something then?  Keep me informed for sure!  Thanks guys.

About the drag on the hull stuff...maybe some really fine sand paper?  I know it would get gunked up with plastic and paint and you would go through a lot of it.-Brian

Honestly, I don't think most, if any, of us really care about a scratched up hull. I often use a slightly submerged or exposed tree as a short term anchor when bass fishing. Just about every trip includes some dragging across rocks, even if it's just to get the yak out of the water and on the cart.

Shhh.  Don't tell the other Hobie fans I said this, because we like being first to the fishing grounds while having our beer at the same time.  I really like my Outback SUV.  Try one if you get the chance.

Thanks for the replies.  I will take all this into consideration as I browse and dream  ;D I wonder if you could use some surf board wax on the bottom to get a little less resistance?  Sounds like you fish well from the boat and stability and fishability are my main concerns.  If I have to work a lil harder to paddle then thats ok with me, I could use the work out! ::)

Wax won't do anything for speed/efficiency. The only thing that changes that is the hull design.
