Finally made another chance to get the kayak wet. Today was the fourth-or-so annual trop to Pine Hollow Reservoir. My grandpa started going with his good friends Ron and Daryl. He invited my dad, brother and I four-or-so years ago, and it's been a tradition since.

9 of us hit the water at the crack of 8.30. I was alone in my kayak and there were four guys each in two boats. Nothing doing for the first two hours by myself trolling. Noticed the bankies doing real well, so I thought I'd join them for a bit. Along came this guy...

As I was on the bank, can't be my "first kayak-caught fish," but it sure as heck can be my first "fish while making a day of kayak fishing." Got back in the kayak and floated around for a few hours more to no avail. I had a couple of strikes (one possibly from Moby Trout), but that was all. It was time to head to shore for a break.

After a great lunch of fried trout with sides of beans, pasta salad and potato salad, and after appetizers of black olives, crackers and jalapeno dip, deviled eggs and duckerroni, polished off with a nice red and cool white wines, I thought I'd wander over to the bank to see what I could see while the other guys cleaned up. Ended up nailing my second fish of the day...

Hopped back in the boat and worked some submerged structure pretty hard. Several strikes and one "fish on" later, still no fish in the boat. About that time, I lost my last bit of gear (crappy packing on my part) and hovered around the other boaters in my party.

Still looking for that first one! By the way, the other 8 guys combined for 32 trout.

I have another interesting thing I could tell from today's trip. Any interest?

Well, I don't know. Is it a "good" interesting, or will I regret it if you tell us? ;)

As for the fishing: being new at a sport, and in a new place, is about as tough as it gets, unless some one is leading you by the hand. It will get better as you start figuring it out.

Nice. You'll get your first yak caught fish soon. Looks like good fun.
